Samuel Swain - Log of the Vigilant

Description: The log contains an account of the voyage of the Vigilant which left London in Oct 1831, rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed for Indonesia. Calls were made at Timor (Mar-Jun 1832) and Ternate (Jul-Aug). The Vigilant then sailed north to New Guinea, whaled in New Ireland waters (Sep-Dec) and continued to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand (21 Feb-23 Mar 1833). Subsequent calls were made at Tongatapu, Tonga (29 Jun-5 Jul), Tutuila, Samoa (10-12 Jul), Bay of Islands (14-30 Oct; 30 Jan-4 Feb 1834), Norfolk Island (20-21 Feb), Bay of Islands (31 Mar-30 Apr), `Eua, Tonga (30 -31 May), Vava'u, Tonga (15-22 Jun), Manu'a, Samoa (25-27 Juun, 7-11 Sep), Savai'i, Samoa (2-4 Sep), Sydney (19 Oct-24 Nov), Bay of Islands (28 Feb-18 Mar 1835). The Vigilant returned to England via Cape Horn on 2 Aug 1835.
