Description: Shows a photographic view of Whangaroa Harbour, with "mushroom" rock formations in the foreground. The National Maritime Museum website says: "The Summer Cruise began Friday night and went through to the next Saturday and cost £7. The first summer cruise was held in 1904 and they continued until 1908. They were truly the high point of the summer, combining picturesque scenery with activities, excellent food and entertainment. On-board facilities included a library and a darkroom for processing photographs. The NGAPUHI was used for this venture, normally on the Whangarei run carrying passengers and cargo, but spruced up in preparation for the Summer Cruise. The cruise took in Great Barrier, the Hen & Chicken Islands, Whangarei, (including trips to Whangarei Falls and the Kamo Mineral Pools), the Bay of Islands, Whangaroa Harbour, Totara North, Mangonui, Doubtless Bay, Kawau Island, Waiwera and home again". Description: Album of tramps, camps, and other boy scouting activities, chiefly photographed by Gerald Rainsford Craddock, who was an active scout member and later scout master during the 1930s at Otorohanga. Maori legends and hand-drawn maps accompany the photographs, bringing New Zealand geography and history alive to the young scouts. Outings include following Te Kooti's trail, searching for caves where moa bones have been found, and climbing to various trig stations in the Waikato area. Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District. Description: Views of the Chatham Islands, with emphasis on the house "Te Whariki" at Tuku, various aspects of wool baling, and wool transportation using a bullock team, and the landscape near Tuku. A number of images show buildings at Waitangi, Chatham Island, including the post office, the Mangoutu Hotel (also known as Odman's Hotel), the courthouse, and Heslop's Hotel. The house "Te Whariki" was built by E. Guest, but seems to be the home of Harry Blyth who appears in a number of the images. Harry Blyth is the collector of the images in the album, and possibly the photographer of some. It is also possible that some photographs were taken by Ernest Guest (photographer and postmaster), and some by Blyth's wife, Daisy Felicia Blyth (nee Cox), who was a photographer in her own right (see Turnbull Library Biographies Index) Title supplied by Library.
