Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. Description: Album containing many contacts from 35mm film, as well as black and white prints of differing sizes, taken by Professor John Tenison Salmon. He takes particular interest in the flora and fauna of New Zealand, the damaging effects of road construction, erosion from bush felling, and destruction caused by introduced species including deer. There are huge collections of close-up images of various plants (only a few of which are listed above), including flowers, leaves and seeds. He comments on mangrove swamps at Tauranga, which are growing at the furthest point from the Equator possible for them to exist. The other important collection shows various stages in the life cycle of insects and animals, including wetas, katydids, different types of moths, mosquitoes, bees, stick insects, and native New Zealand frogs (Hochstetter's frogs) (p. 91-92). Photographs relating to wetas include scenes of ovipositor tracks of cave wetas in the mud in Waitomo Caves; different varieties of wetas including cave wetas; and weta nests. In 1935 he photographed two Australian species of lizards which he found in the yard of the Dominion Museum, the Australia crested dragon, and the Australian blue-tongued lizard. Many of these photographs were taken on a photomicroscope, including photographs of rock sections (p. 72-75), and photographs of insects and larvae. There are also views of his photomicrosope equipment. Professor Salmon worked at Victoria University, and there are numbers of "contaflex" views of Wellington from his office window, taken to demonstrate the use of various filters (p. 26-29). There are also images of Professor Salmon in his study lab in April 1955; and further images of him in the Entomological Department of the Dominion Museum. Page 35 has views of a science exhibition organised by the Wellington Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand held in the Wellington Town Hall, 12-14 April 1948. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: A single-storied house with fence to one side, at the base of the Hutt hills, viewed from across water, possible the edge of the Hutt Estuary, with raupo, flax and birds. Initially attributed to William Swainson with suggested title [House in the Hutt Valley]. However comparison with the style of George Swainson's crayon drawing of Herongate (A-188-013) suggests that William's son George is the more likely artist and that the house is located close to Herongate in Petone, not far from Moreings Creek and the Hutt Estuary.
