Description: Shows a sketch of three figures taking a canoe up over boulders in rapids at a narrow part of the river, between bushcovered cliff banks. One man is seated at the far end of the canoe, the middle one is lifting the canoe, and the closest man holds a taut rope attached to it. Description: Shows a bridge of three planks laid over rapids in a stream, and supported by two piles of rocks. A range of snowy mountains is visible in the background. The artist arrived in New Zealand in 1876. She is not known to have had any relations by the name of Orbell. The name 'Grannie Orbell' may be an affectionate description of an older local woman, rather than suggesting a blood relationship. 'Grannie Orbell' has not been identified. Description: Map of the Wanganui River, on six sides of 4 sheets, five of which are numbered, of a canoe and camping cruise from Whakahoro to Atene. The sixth and final map of the route has the subheading 'Locality of base camp and training ground'. Each map includes some navigational instructions and rapids are numbered and named in a key as are distances of one mile and five miles adjusted between major landmarks. Historical sites, numerous pa sites, huts, settlements, caves, peaks, springs, mineral and freshwater sources, landings, many mission stations and stations are named. Several inset sketches cover the difficult stretches of the river, mainly rapids, and show the routes the canoes should take. Each map includes mileages at the beginning and end of each featured section while arrows indicate North and Downstream. Extensive notes give sources of historical detail and include general information. Quantity: 6 map(s) both sides of 2 sheets and one side of another two sheets.
