Date: [ca 1925]

From: Godber, Albert Percy, 1875-1949 :Collection of albums, prints and negatives

Reference: APG-1089-1/2-b-F

Description: Group of women and children alongside Climax locomotive 1650, at No 9 timber camp, Ongarue. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber circa 1925. Dated from assesment of the women's dresses. This image has been reproduced in three publications (as at February 2003): in "The era of the bush tram in New Zealand" by Paul Mahoney (1998, p 51); in "Rails through the bush" by Bob Stott (1973); and "The bush tram to the mill\" by Bob Stott (1981, p 51). The information given in Paul Mahoney's book suggests that this is a picnic party (as given in a pencilled inscription beneath the original print in Godber Album Vol 109, p 47 (PA1-q-102)); but Bob Stott suggests this conveyance was "used to bring bush camp families out to the relative civilisation of the mill settlement and the like". Hansen, Albert, 1876-1957 :Pukehoe Hill [ca 1940]

Date: 1935 - 1945

By: Hansen, Albert, 1876-1957

Reference: B-116-019

Description: Looking across a railway track towards a hill dotted with houses. A factory with a smoking chimney is on the left, across the track. There are rail trucks on a more distant track, and men working alongside the railway line. The factory has been identified as the 'Dehy' factory, probably set up by the Americans during World War II, to dehydrate vegetables. It burned down after the war. Believed on acquisition to the Library to show Pukehou, central Hawkes Bay and to date to ca 1900. However a letter dated 27 March 2013 from the artist's grandson clarified its location as Pukekohe Hill, Franklin District, where the artist lived, and the factory as one established by the Americans in World War II. Other Titles - Pukekohe Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - A. Hansen; Backing board recto - Pukehoe Hill. On backing board of frame, now discarded Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 268 x 383 mm. Provenance: Previously unsold at Cordy's auction, Auckland, 21 August 2006

Lingard, G P, fl 1910s? :Runanga coal mine and Mt Cook. [1905-1920?]

Date: 1905 - 1920

By: Lingard, E P, active 1910s?

Reference: G-102

Description: Shows a view from a road in the foreground that leads down to a small settlement consisting of a row of huts beside a building that may be the opening to a mine. A railway truck is in the centre foreground, on a line leading to the opening. The settlement is in a valley with low hills and higher mountains in the background. Some of the trees in the valley are turning autumn colours. The picture is dated 1861 with an inscription in a later hand on the backing board. However Runanga was planned as a model town for miners in around 1901. The land was subdivided into leasehold sites in 1903-04, and timber was milled locally to build houses. It is possible that the town in the picture is not Runanga. Despite the title, the snow-clad mountain in the background is not Mount Cook and is likely to be the hills at the south end of the Paparoa Range. Other Titles - Runanga Coal mine near Greymouth Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - G P Lingard; Backing board recto - top centre - [Label from auction listing shows assigned title of work: Runanga coal mine and Mt Cook]; Backing board recto - top right - 1861 Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on canvas on board, 355 x 460 mm.
