Description: Album of tramps, camps, and other boy scouting activities, chiefly photographed by Gerald Rainsford Craddock, who was an active scout member and later scout master during the 1930s at Otorohanga. Maori legends and hand-drawn maps accompany the photographs, bringing New Zealand geography and history alive to the young scouts. Outings include following Te Kooti's trail, searching for caves where moa bones have been found, and climbing to various trig stations in the Waikato area. Land taken during the Second World War for a military airfield at Raglan was returned to Tainui Awhiro people, but only after a long dispute. Many are unidentified but the photographer has described this set as 'Picton to Days Bay', 'Muritai [Road, Lower Hutt?] to Wellington Airport', 'Hamilton to Ngaruawahia', 'Waihi Gorge to Tauranga',' Whakatane to Rotorua', 'Russell to Bay of Islands', 'Wairoa', and 'North Auckland to Ohope'. Contains: Views of Waipoua Forest, Northland Region, showing kauri trees and signage for Tane Mahuta, a giant kauri tree. Two views of airports, one is a grass airstrip, the other is probably Wellington Airport. Description: Buildings in the Waikato Region. These include - Buildings in Hamilton - Early 20th century commercial and public buildings. A large number of houses of all sorts including some state houses and art deco styled houses. Other localities include Gordonston, Tauwhare, Huntly, Waingaro, Rotowaro, Raglan, Ngaruawahia, and Okete. These include much the same sorts of buildings as well as churches, schools, hotels, public halls, cemeteries, and bridges. There is also a sequence of views of the abandoned carbonisation works at Rotowaro which opened in 1931 and closed in 1987. Quantity: 154 colour original photographic print(s).

Description: Collection comprises the private journal of Andrew Thomas H Carbery, dated 1863 to 1865; two commissions appointing Carbey as assistant surgeon to the British army and to the 14th Regiment of Foot in 1858, and a leave of absence dated 1865 which gives Carbery leave of absence from the army starting from 29 June1866 to his retirement from service. The journal outlines Carbery's activities during this period 1863 to 1865 and comments on the conduct of the war and the Hauhau movement. It also contains miscellaneous anecdotes, verse and sketches. Also includes a type transcript of the journal created by Andrea Shand in 1958. Source of information on Carbery's regiment was taken from MS-Papers-2310-2. Source of title - Title page Accompanying material - Transcript of the journal (folder 2) Carbery was Assistant Surgeon with the 2nd battalion of the 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot. He was based in New Zealand between 1859 and 1866. He saw active service in the Waikato, Auckland and Raglan areas with a detachment (flying column) of the 12th, 14th, 65th and 70th Regiments.
