Description: Letters and journal of Anne Catherine Wilson, edited by M G Armstrong, with appendices, list of mss and printed sources consulted, genealogical notes re Wilson and Hawker families, photographs (photocopies) of family members and residences. Photocopies of holograph letters of Anne to her husband, 1835-1838; and photocopy of Anne's shipboard diary for 1832. Anne Wilson was the wife of the missionary, John Alexander Wilson who was attached to the Church Missionary Society. The couple left England on board the `Camden', a convict vessel bound for NSW in 1932, and arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1833. Anne spent most of the next five years at the mission station at Puriri, near Thames, with other missionary wives involved in raising her children, school teaching and household chores. She was constantly separated from her husband who spent long periods travelling through troubled areas of Tauranga, Matamata and Roturua. The harsh life took its toll on Anne, and after a long illness she died at Tauranga in Nov 1838. Source of title - Supplied title Other Titles - My hand will write what my heart dictates... Description: Interview with Alice Annie Sloane (nee Smith), born in Maungaturoto in 1918. Talks about the family situation at the time of her birth (when her parents lived on a farm at Kaukapaka), and their shift to a railways house at Puriri on the Hauraki Plains, when her father took a job there during the Depression. Descibes taking a job in the post office at Mata, south of Whangarei, at 18, community life there, and her close friendship with Erin Sloane, whose brother Ray she would later marry. Talks about working at various jobs in Auckland, where she met Ray at wartime dances. Describes the Sloane family's farm at Mata, where they settled, working relationships, domestic matters, land clearing and pasture development. Discusses life in the Mata community including the growth in population as farms were being cut into smaller units, school, Country Women's Institute and rural entertainments. Talks about religious differences in her family - she was a Catholic in a mainly non-Catholic community. Describes visits to Ruakaka, and to Whangarei - lists the businesses they frequented and refers to the delivery of meat and bread to the farm at Mata. Description: Album of newspaper and magazine cuttings, black and white photographs, and prints of colour illustrations. Mostly connected with New Zealand native trees, and the timber industry. There are pages dealing with different native trees, and then with the various processes involved in felling the trees; transportation, including horse-drawn, logging railways, and water-born timber using dams; and timber mills. On page [7] of this album there are three personal photographs taken by John Logan Campbell from his home in Parnell, used as Christmas cards in 1900 and 1901; on page [27] is a print of a photograph originally taken by Albert Percy Godber, showing a poster in Maori warning against carelessness in lighting fires in the bush (see full information about the original, in the record at APG-1454-1/4-G).
