Description: Stan Wells recalls being sent by Ada Wells to a Salvation Army orphanage for boys in Temuka when he was six. Describes the few privilages, the starvation diet, no play and the work. Explains having his name changed. Recalls corporal punishments. Talks of his sister Alice known as Bim, sister Edna, also the few women who sheltered him. Talks of money provided by the Masons' Lodge for upkeep of this once grand home and its deterioration. Recalls having top marks in drawing and talks of his inability to play cricket or rugby at school later. Describes memorable days when the boys were allowed out of the orphanage. Explains about his holidays in Oamaru, meeting the Fergusons with whom he went to live, the servant - master relationship with Mr. Ferguson. Discusses similarities in the personalities of Harry Wells and Mr. Ferguson, an organist, and talks about their purchase of an organ. Discusses differenes in attitudes between Hazel Armstrong, who took an interest in him, and Mrs Ferguson. Talks about his work as a 15 year old on a farm at Wanganui, his work on a poultry farm with poor pay, and the cost of meals. Describes his jobs as a gardener. Description: Interview with Marion Beech (nee Harvey), born in Newcastle, England, in 1917. Talks about her musical family including her father's "glorious tenor voice", and emigrating to New Zealand in 1928. Refers to leaving school young and working at Smith and Caughey. Mentions her brother Edgar starting a jazz club in Auckland. Comments that life had been carefree until war came, boys started to leave, and her brother joined up. Talks about seeing Edgar off three times, and mixed feelings about soldiers marching down Queen Street. Refers to the courage of conscientious objectors. Comments on rationing, not recalling being short of food, vegetable gardening, and passing on unused coupons. Explains they received all war news from the radio, and were lucky not to have television coverage. Talks about meeting her husband Rev Walter Beech when they were best man and chief bridemaid at a wedding. Refers to marrying and moving to the Bay of Islands where Walter, who had failed a Services medical, worked with many bereft people. Mentions Walter's extra petrol coupons. Comments on the vicarage being an open house to doctors and nurses, not being concerned about New Zealand being invaded, and making parcels to send to New Zealand forces overseas. Talks about letters from her brother and the slow postal service. Describes how her brother died when his plane crashed during take-off, just after his honeymoon, the family reaction, and his widow Josephine spending two years in New Zealand after the war. Comments on the community spirit among church members and that everyone had the understanding of being in it together. Recalls being thrilled by the end of the war, and hearing about Hiroshima. Comments that her husband knew he would be dealing with damaged men returning. Mentions moving to a parish in Papakura where Walter gave services at the army camp. Talks about 300 English Tommies coming to the camp to recover from a Japanese torture camp, and the vicarage being open to the soldiers day and night as they were starved of home life. Calls her relationship with the soldiers "one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences" of her life. Description: Edwin Kaminski born in Poland 1921. Talks about his early life in Poland. Recalls attempting to escape from Poland after the outbreak of World War II, being captured and sent to work in the coal mines in Russia from where he eventually escaped and made his way to England. Talks about the beginning of his seafaring career as a marine engineer and the shipping companies he worked for. Recalls emigrating to New Zealand with his wife and working in Haast for five months before joining P Ferons & Son Ltd, who owned fishing vessesls. Describes his work, maintaining the company's vessels which, directly or indirectly, numbered 80. Recalls a nine month period living aboard a converted naval fairmile which was anchored in Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island and was used, as an interim measure, as a floating refrigeration plant to service some of the local fleet, until a freezer could be built ashore. Talks about fishing in the Chatham Islands and describes his involvement in the setting up of a processing plant at the Chathams by Ferons Ltd during the tail end of the crayfish boom which occurred there from 1965 to 1971. Discusses crayfish processing and his experiences with the locals on the Chathams. Recalls being an engineer on a number of Chatham Island convoys which travelled between the Chathams and Lyttelton. Mentions the vessel `La Paloma' which was lost with all hands during one of the convoys. Talks about the salvage of the fishing vessel `Rosaleen' which he nursed to Lyttelton. Joined the Marine Department in the early 1970s as chief engineer of their new fisheries research ship `James Cook' and discusses the problems in preparing the vessel for her new role. Recalls later working on the department's new vessel the `Kaharoa' which was built in Whangarei during the early 1980s. Retired from MAF in the late 1980s and talks about his occasional work as chief engineer on a variety of vessels being delivered to or from New Zealand. Ends the interview with his view of the present fishing industry in New Zealand and comments on some of the policies. Description: Photographs originally inside a journal written by Gilbert Marsden Beale while working as a tailor at the Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Featherston, Wairarapa, between circa 1943-1945, during World War II. Photographer unidentified, possibly Beale. Descriptions are written on the backs of the prints by Beale. Images are taken at three places just outside the camp's barbed wire fence. One is taken by No 2 gate and shows the hospital buildings in the distance. Another is taken outside the main gate. Another looks though the fence towards the mechanical workshop. Description: Six-panelled account of Te Kooti's resistance to European incursions onto his land, his capture, transportation to the Chatham Islands, his revenge killing of the families of Major Biggs and Captain Wilson and Paratene at Poverty Bay in 1868, and his ultimate pardon in 1883 These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 330 x 565 mm. Japanese prisoners of war, Featherston

Description: Photographs of the prisoner-of-war camp Featherston, 1942-1945. These include views of the buildings, New Zealand military personel, and groups of Japanese pows, some of them identified. Many of the photographs were taken by John Pascoe. The rest of the album relates to Eric Thompson's connection with ex Japanese pows from the early 1970s to 1986. These include visits to New Zealand by some of the ex prisoners of war. One of the outcomes of this interaction was the presentation of a bronze memorial plaque by Japanese veterans which was set in the Featherston military camp memorial park. The plaque commemorated, particularly those Japanese prisoners of war killed by new Zealand guards on 25 February 1943. This was followed in 1986 by an Ireisai, a ceremony for the consolation of the spirits of the dead, which was performed at Featherston by a Japanese priest, Mr Adachi. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Survey plan of the Auckland Albert Barracks, showing the boundaries of the barracks extending out to what later became Wellesley St, Kitchener St, Symonds St, Princes St and Alfred St. The barracks are enclosed by a stone wall (annotated note indicates part of the wall still in existence). Within the barracks is the armoury, a school, sergeant's quarters, military prison, Major Tisdall's house, the 'Dead House', large garden, the magazine, store and drill shed.
