Description: Autograph book owned by an unidentified New Zealand Guard at the Prisoner of War Camp, Featherston during World War Two. Volume contains signatures by New Zealand guards at the camp; signaturers accompanied by illustations from Japanese prisoners of war; and signatures from American soldiers based in Hawera (1943). Language - Signatures and comments by prisoners are mainly in their own language Source of title - Supplied by Library The Featerston Military Camp was established during World War One. At the request of the USA the camp was re-established as a Prisoner of War Camp for Japanese soldiers in September 1942. Description: Photographs originally inside a journal written by Gilbert Marsden Beale while working as a tailor at the Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Featherston, Wairarapa, between circa 1943-1945, during World War II. Photographer unidentified, possibly Beale. Descriptions are written on the backs of the prints by Beale. Images are taken at three places just outside the camp's barbed wire fence. One is taken by No 2 gate and shows the hospital buildings in the distance. Another is taken outside the main gate. Another looks though the fence towards the mechanical workshop. Description: Six-panelled account of Te Kooti's resistance to European incursions onto his land, his capture, transportation to the Chatham Islands, his revenge killing of the families of Major Biggs and Captain Wilson and Paratene at Poverty Bay in 1868, and his ultimate pardon in 1883 These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 330 x 565 mm. Description: Photographs of the prisoner-of-war camp Featherston, 1942-1945. These include views of the buildings, New Zealand military personel, and groups of Japanese pows, some of them identified. Many of the photographs were taken by John Pascoe. The rest of the album relates to Eric Thompson's connection with ex Japanese pows from the early 1970s to 1986. These include visits to New Zealand by some of the ex prisoners of war. One of the outcomes of this interaction was the presentation of a bronze memorial plaque by Japanese veterans which was set in the Featherston military camp memorial park. The plaque commemorated, particularly those Japanese prisoners of war killed by new Zealand guards on 25 February 1943. This was followed in 1986 by an Ireisai, a ceremony for the consolation of the spirits of the dead, which was performed at Featherston by a Japanese priest, Mr Adachi. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Two photographs of of Japanese prisoners of war embarking on an American ship for their return to Japan, 30 December 1945. One group of photographs records people gathered for an Ireisai, a memorial ceremony for the consolation of the spirits of the dead, performed at the Featherston Military Camp memorial park by a japanese priest, 15 December 1986. Eric Thompson, his wife Isobel, and other New Zealanders associated with the prisoner of war camp at Featherston, also feature in the photographs.
