Description: Remains of the house built in Paihia in 1932 for Bishop William Williams taken circa 1910-1913 by Frederick George Radcliffe. Source of descriptive information - First part of the record title, and historical note, from Library client. Relationship complexity - Other later images of the ruins are at PA1-0-141-90 and PAColl-7080-80. This was a stone and plaster house and, after Williams left to go to Te Waimate, was occupied by Charles Baker, before being used to accommodate the Church Mission printing press. William Colenso occupied it with the press 1839-1842 then John Telford 1843-1845. It is a registered historic site (Register 403). Description: Photographs of and relating to the Wilson family ex Eketahuna. William M Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1868, coming to New Zealand when 8 years of age. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. See Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Wellington Provincial District, Eketahuna. Includes dwellings; carriages; group outings and portraits; 1 of the Club Hotel of F D Pelling; 3 of the Ryan family at Tawa Flat; 1 of a house at Island Bay, 1 of a thatched whare at Plimmerton, a Ghuznee St boarding house; 2 relating to the Burnett family; 2 scenes in Manakau; 1 of D A Greenlees store; 2 of Rarotanga; 2 relating to the business of Lyon & Blair, steam printers and lithographers; 1 of a group outside a house in Eastbourne; 3 relating to the Manson family; 1 of a military camp in New Zealand in preparation for the South African War. Description: Chiefly photographs of the aftermath of the Tarawera eruption in 1886, many taken by Charles Spencer. Images include Dr Hector's party; views of mud-covered country; damage to buildings at the village of Te Wairoa; Henry Lundius and J C Blythe standing outside the hen-house in which several survivors took refuge; and views of the new lake formed after the eruption. Several views show the area before the eruption. The last two photographs in the album show the Manawatu Gorge bridge under construction, and the engine room at the Government Printing Office in Wellington. Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. The only identifying information is a few pencilled notes giving some locations, but there are no captions identifying people. There is a large sequence showing events surrounding the first celebrations marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1934 attended by Lord Bledisloe. He had purchased the site, and donated money for the Treaty House renovations in 1932. The celebrations brought 10,000 Maori to Waitangi. The images show huge crowds, haka parties, various iwi performing, and parties of dignitaries including Lord and Lady Bledisloe, Joseph Gordon Coates and George William Forbes. Other scenes with Lord Bledisloe show him visiting the Waitaki Hydroelectric power station. Views of New Zealand include Government Tourist Bureau accomodation houses including those at Waitomo and the Hermitage (Mt. Cook); accomodation houses at Helensville and Parakai with interior and exterior views, and showing activities available (spa pools, games such as croquet, golf, and bowls); anglers standing by swordfish they have caught; skiing and ski lessons; and waterfalls. Industrial and agricultural views show dairy cows, citrus groves, the Kiwi Bacon Factory, printing presses, and race courses.
