Trip to Nelson, Picton, and the Sounds. This included a trip on the ship, Blenheim, on Pelorus and Queen Charlotte sounds, with a stop off at Havelock. General views of Nelson, and specifically Trafalgar Street from below the Cathedral. Bridge in Queens Gardens. Bridge over the Maitai River. A stop at Wangamoa on a motor trip from Nelson to Blenheim. Views of Picton and harbour. SS Admiral taking people on a picnic, Picton. Picton Waterworks. Train leaving Picton. Cadillac motor car abandoned after the engine caught fire for the second time. A race between two men in shells, one of whom was the New Zealand Champion single sculler, Darcy Hadfield. SS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu. Mount Ruapehu, Aratiatia Rapids, and Huka Falls. Some prints in this collection have notes on the back in a consistant, neat handwriting. In three cases these are signed E N Webster, who advises that he arrived in Wellington 5 February 1918, and left 15 June 1922. During this period, as well as photographing Wellington and district, he travelled on holiday to New Zealand cities and tourist destinations. The photographs were taken between 1919 and 1921 judging from the prints that have dates. His second name was Norman, and this is the name he used to sign letters on postcards sent from Christchurch in 1919 to his mother, and a friend called May. There is also a note attached to an illustration of Ben Lomond in the collection on which he signs himself Norman Webster. In formation on the back of postcards indicate that he came from Australia, and in 1916 lived at Nambour, Queensland. Quantity: 148 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Volume one of 'The 9.5 am' Feb 1902 to Jan 1903. Contains whimsical articles about political and 'colonial' life. Includes jokes, poems, extracts, and illustrations. In an inscription on the inside cover of this volume, Johannes Andersen describes himself as "Editor, article writer, anecdotist, P.D. et hoc gen an". Includes images of people, buildings and landscapes in the Canterbury, Otago and Southland Regions including: - The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings captioned as "Offices of the 9.5 am". - Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula. - Several photographs of F M B Fisher who "left with the 19th contingent April 19, 1902" and a poem about Fisher leaving for the South African War, 1899-1902 (aka Boer War) titled 'A Farewell'. Also an image of "The Tenth Contingent passing City Council Chambers". Pages 81-83 and 95-98 of this volume features 'Tramps Abroad' written by Fisher, relating to his experiences of the South African War. - The 'Onawe', 'Fleet Wing', and 'Zephyr' yachts. Who is it?" featuring a man with a very long nose, upon which are dangled a bunch of carrots. The man is riding a small donkey. - A photograph of Johannes Andersen 'Our fighting editor'. - The Southern Alps captioned 'The backbone of New Zealand'. - 'Land sale at Darfield' featuring men inside a wooden building. - Images of the Avon River. - The Post Office building in Ashburton. - Eight photographs of Hanmer and the surrounding area, including images of the Sanitorium. - A section titled 'Southward Ho!' which includes photographs of Port Chalmers, the 'Mararoa' steam ship, and 'Falls on Fraser River (Stewarts Island)'. - An article relating to the 52nd Anniversary of the Canterbury Province, located at p114 of the volume (Jan 1, 1903). It includes a photograph of some stone and wooden buildings captioned as "'The Ark'. A specimen of archaic architecture". Foxley Norris album

Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Description: A pocket inserted inside the front cover holds two photographs of wedding celebrations at a British Army regiment in India. One of the scenes shows a large party of men and women, including British and Indian men in uniform. These were taken circa 1910. The main body of the album contains views of Canterbury, Otago and the West Coast of the South Island, taken around 1877 by an unidentified photographer. Wheeler and son album 2

Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea.
