Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: Family and other personal correspondence. Includes some of William Rolleston, his wife Mary, but mainly their son Francis Joseph; also including other family members. There are some letters of political, social and community significance relating to the careers of William Rolleston, and his son F J Rolleston. Writers include Professor J B Condliffe, Sir Francis Bell, Sir James Parr. Added in 1980 to this accession were 11 letters 1891-1893 from J D Ormond, Harold Kemp, E J Watts etc; 15 letters of family to F Rolleston at school, 1881-1889; various records of F Rolleston's life at school; his `Parodies on Gilbert and Sullivan' etc. Later in same year further Rolleston letters, 1868-1949 were added, including letters relating to the political career of John Christopher Rolleston. Description: Papers include holograph extracts from Speedy's diary of 1863 giving details of skirmishes in Waiuku area; letters to Speedy in his official capacity; letters to Sarah from her husband and relatives 1863-1890; letters from Sarah to her children 1890-1894; marriage certificate for Sarah and James 1835; miscellaneous letters to members of the Speedy family; mss list of birth dates for family members; envelope addressed to J H Jerram in Auckland (one of Speedy's daughters became a Mrs Jerram); and two photographs, one of the family home at Fairlea, Waiuku, and the other possibly of Major Speedy, ca 1860s James Speedy served as an officer in the British Army in India. He married Sarah Squire in Calcutta in 1835. By the 1850s the family had moved to NZ and settled in the Waiuku area. Major Speedy was Resident Magistrate and Native Agent for the Mauku, Waiuku and Pukekohe districts during the wars of the 1860s. Miss Christine Little - The Donovan story

Description: The essay is the story of Patrick Donovan, an Irishman who came to Auckland in 1840 with his first wife, Julia McAuliffe and their children. They first went to Hobart and then Melbourne before arriving in New Zealand. He established himself in business in Auckland as innkeeper of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle, Shortland Crescent, and later farmed at Onehunga. He was the owner of land in various parts of Auckland. In 1853 he was elected to the Auckland Provincial Council, serving till 1855. Julia died in 1845 and he remarried Elizabeth Scott in the same year.
