Description: Shows two nests on the branch of a tree: the Auckland Hospital Board nest and the Whare Paia nest. A caricature of Titewhai Harawira depicted as a bird is shown in the Whare Paia nest, and an unknown man from the Auckland Hospital Board is represented in the nest on the left. A bird representing Ken Mason flies overhead, and has defecated into the faces of the inhabitants of both nests. A kiwi at lower right comments: "One in the eye for arrogance!" Extended Title - New Zealand truth The Mason Report concerned \"procedures used in certain psychiatric hospitals in relation to admission, discharge or release on leave of certain classes of patients\". The report was critical of Whare Paia, scheme was a service for Maori mental health patients, wherein it was hoped to bring together Maori and pakeha treatments and methods. The report criticised the scheme for lack of direction, purpose and structure. The title\" One flew over the cuckoo's nest\" is a reference to the American motion picture of the same name (1975, from a 1962 novel by Ken Kesey) set in a mental institution. A man representing New Zealand's history says to him, `as a special farewell present you can keep the sandwich boards...'. George Chapman was president of the National Party in 1982, the cartoon refers to Muldoon's policies and the reactions they got. Chapman seems to be taking some stick for supporting Muldoon's views. Description: Norman Kirk, leader of the Labour opposition, steps into Lake Manapouri as two National MPs Duncan MacIntyre and Daniel Riddiford look on from a row boat. One of them remarks, 'I don't mind him jumping into a lake - but just not this one!'. The raising of the water level of Lake Manapouri was a contentious election issue during the 1972 election. The Labour government of Norman Kirk was elected with a platform that included a strong endorsement of the Save Manapouri Campaign. The mishandling of the affair by Phil Goff is yet another blow for the Labour Party as the November election approaches. Possibly taken at a hui on 12 September 1891, when Ngāti Huia gathered to receive the infant son of Governor Onslow, who had been named Huia out of respect for Māori. This photograph was previously identified as being at Karaka Bay, Wellington This photo was probably taken at the same time other photos in this collection were also taken at Karaka Bay with Heeni Te Rei (a close relative of Parata's) and Kereopa Tukumaru.
