Description: Cadastral map, with topographic features, of the Hutt River valley from an area north of the Stokes Valley bridge to the harbour. Includes the road which runs parallel to the river. High Street, Victoria Street, Railway Avenue, and Hutt Road are named. The settlements of Richmond, Aglionby and Britannia are named. Includes numbered sections with owners' names. Clifford, Molesworth, Taine, Park, Child, Alzdorf, Hanson, Stokes, Dr. Evans, Riddiford, Dr. Dorset, Swainson, Barton, Compton, Captain Daniell, Colonel Wakefield, Burcham, Bidwill. Description: A small thatched cottage with a tall conical roof, propped up with branches on three visible sides. A man standing to the left and a barrel lying on the ground near the building, flax bushes in the foreground and the harbour and Western Hutt hills in the background. Probably the first Petone court house building. Compare the building illustrated on p. 12 of Louis Ward's 'Early Wellington'. A very similar building is shown with a caption indicating that this is possibly the court house of the The Settlement at Petone. A further almost identical view on sale at Leonard Joel, Melbourne, 18 April 2010 is titled First Court House, Petoni Beach ... 1846. Description: Central third of full panorama from Thorndon to Te Aro. Main features named. Shows groups of figures on foreshore including man on horseback, man examining ships through spyglass, two small groups of Maori watching, two men smoking long pipes, 14 sailing ships including one rounding Point Halswell, Somes Island with flag flying at its southern end, two Maori craft including one with sails. View extends from Warepori's Village in Pitone at left, to Mount Victoria at right. Features named are: Warepori's village Pitone, Valley of the Hutt, Tararua Mountains, Somes's Island, Pt Halswell (the entrance from the sea), Pt Jerningham, Mr Duppa's house (Oriental Bay), Mount Victoria. Description: Shows views in the Wellington area. The top view looks along Petone beach to the south-east, with Petone Pa and the 'Native Chapel' (the large building on the left). The central view, taken from Tinakori Road's junction with Hawkestone Street, looks towards Kelburn. There is a bullock cart in the foreground, and three Maori carrying large bundles. The nearest house, on the lower slopes of Tinakore Hill, is that of Nathaniel Levin, with the house of Mr Holroyd above it, and Mr Dorset's house further in the distance at the foot of the trees that cover the hill. The lowest view at Ohiro Bay (or valley) shows a flock of sheep attended by a shepherd and a large-single storied house nestled against trees, the home of Judge Halswell. Description: Te Puni standing, with full facial moko, clad in a dogskin cloak and holding a taiaha in his right hand. Behind him is Petone Pa, and a flagpole with the New Zealand Company flag on the right. The western Hutt hills are in the background. After the drawing by Charles Heaphy. See lithograph entitled `Epuni, or greedy... '. Engraver unknown. Accompanying text reads: Annexed is a portrait of Epemi, a chief of Port Nicholson, in North Island. He is tattooed, wears the native robe, and carries a long spear; but most of the chiefs are familiar with the musket and their strength is counted not by men but by muskets. Description: A single-storied house with fence to one side, at the base of the Hutt hills, viewed from across water, possible the edge of the Hutt Estuary, with raupo, flax and birds. Initially attributed to William Swainson with suggested title [House in the Hutt Valley]. However comparison with the style of George Swainson's crayon drawing of Herongate (A-188-013) suggests that William's son George is the more likely artist and that the house is located close to Herongate in Petone, not far from Moreings Creek and the Hutt Estuary.
