Description: Copy of an engraving published in John Hawkesworth (1773, II, Plate 18)) after Spoering 'A fortified town or village...' from Captain James Cook's first voyage to New Zealand in 1769. Shows a Te Puta o te Paretauhinu Pa atop a pierced rock at Mercury Bay, with two canoes in front, two further empty canoes pulled up on rocks to the right, and the Endeavour at anchor to the left. Verso shows handwritten text in Dutch (translation of this text in accompanying typescript). There is some variation in the details between this and the engraved version. The scene is at Mercury Bay, not Tolaga Bay Other Titles - A view of a fortified village built on a pierced rock in New Zealand [translation]. A fortified town or village called a hippah, built on a perforated rock at Tolaga in New Zealand. Mercury Bay Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title in ink.
