Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: In closely-written pages, Card describes in detail his voyage on HMS `Fantome' to Sydney, where he transhipped to the `Havannah' on 24 Nov 1851. He describes his voyages to and around New Zealand, to Fiji and Tonga, before returning to Australia and New Zealand in November 1853, where his captain died. He writes of his life and loves in Sydney and Brisbane from 1854 to Mar 1855, when he is reposted to England. Description: Photographs on album pages: photograph of Mount Peel Station, its interior and grounds including Mr Acland in his study, his daughters and their friends identified by inititals, including one of L D Acland and B B Acland, the latter knitting a sock, and the Church of the Holy Innocence viewed across a field of hay stacks with the forest planted by Acland behind it; more of the same women boating and picnicking, including a view of a gorge taken by Harriet Acland, a church interior and Bishop Harper playing cricket with a young boy; Ilam homestead covered in clematis with balconies and verandahs and extensive grounds next to the Avon River, and the Watts Russell family group at Pareora August 1894 with their dog and saddled horses in the background; the West Coast Times printing office with the men outside it, C G Tripp and family and a Centerbury view; and two views of Tripp's homestead at Orari. Description: Langdon's book, The Lost Caravel, was published in June 1975 by Pacific Publications. The book puts forward the theory that the crew of a Spanish ship, the caravel San Lesmes, lost in the eastern South Pacific in 1526, played a prominent role in the prehistory of several Polynesian Islands including the Tuamotu Archipelago, Society Islands, Austral Islands, Easter Island and New Zealand. The San Lesmes was one of the ships of the expedition of Garcia Jofre de Loaia. The Lost Caravel Re-explored gathers his evidence in support of the presence of European castaways in the pre-Cook Pacific. Description: Material extracted by Robert McNab from New Zealand material in French archives (including the archives of the Ministere de la Marine) concerning Lavaud and his vessel l'Aube Contains significant parts of two essays written by Lavaud, commandant of L'Aube. These essays describe the attempts of colonisation of the South Island of New Zealand by the French, principally in Akaroa. Some passages try to rehabilitate Baron de Thierry. Contains various letters, most of them to Lavaud, among are which letters from Bishop Pompallier about Wallis and Futuna, letters from William Hobson and letters from C B Robinson (postmaster at Akaroa). Description: One of the several logs from the first voyage, beginning on 26 May 1768 and finishing 6 Oct 1770. For further description see J C Beaglehole, "The Journals of Captain James Cook....', Cambridge 1955, Volume 1, pp ccxxxvii-ccxxxviii) This log was originally attributed by the Library to Cook's astronomer, Charles Green, based on a statement in an early NSW Library Cook bibliography. However, that was disproved by J C Beaglehole in his discussion of this and other logs in the introduction to his 'The Journals of Captain James Cook....', volume 1 (Cambridge 1955, pp ccxxxvii-ccxxxviii). Although he does not discount a connection with Green he concludes it is best described as of anonymous creation.
