Description: Photographs taken in the 1870s, covering a wide range of places, photographers mostly unidentified, and most images with no captions. The first group were taken in an around the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, but particularly focussing on the Suez Canal. The sequence includes a copy of a montage produced by Hippolyte Arnoux, showing a map of the route of the canal, surrounded by photographs of canal designer Ferdinand de Lesseps and various sites along the route. Other images in this sequence were probably taken by Arnoux who was working in Egypt during this period. The next group of images travel via India (?), to Australia. Views of Melbourne include Government House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Houses of Parliament, the Scots' Church (in Collins Street), the Post Office, the Town Hall, and the Public Library. Following these is a panorama of Sydney, and views of Tasmania. The New Zealand scenes start with a panorama of Auckland, the Mount Eden residence of G.B. (?, pencilled name undeciphered), and the Auckland Domain). Images further south include Ohinemutu; the Pink and White Terraces; Napier; the Manawatu Gorge; Wellington (with the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel visible in the foreground); Nelson; the wreck of the ship Otago, at Chasland's Mistake; and a number of views in the Dunedin area. The background shows a view over a stretch of water and distant hills. Description: Aquatint based on a drawing of Te Puta o te Paretauhinau Pa at Mercury Bay, Coromandel Peninsula. The drawing of the pa is by Herman Diedrich Sporing, Sir Joseph Banks' clerk; the canoe is copied from a drawing by Sydney Parkinson, the official artist aboard the Endeavour. The scene shows a long war canoe in the left foreground; an arched rock in the water behind the boat with a pa on top of it; two canoes pulled up on the bank to the right behind the arched rock and dense bush in the background. From an unknown Italian publication. One of the engravers of this publication was Biasioli (1790-1830). The pa shown was seen in November 1769. See Joppien & Smith. The art of Captain Cook's voyages, vol 1, cat. no. 1.121 for the original drawing of the pa, and 1.142 for the original drawing of the Maori canoe. Description: View at Taupo Point, just south of Separation Point, Golden Bay, showing Taupo Pa with palisades and buildings and a bush-clad knoll beyond, the sea and several inshore islands. Depending upon the extent of Messenger's knowledge, the boat anchored off the beach is probably a Deal boat, and the mizzen was a "standing lug". The foresail was a "dipping lug" (see note below, and letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999) A copy of John Wallis Barnicoat's eye-witness drawing "Taupo, Massacre Bay, March 1844", negative 11570 1/2. The original drawing is in a private collection but the Library has a photograph. Probably drawn for James Cowan's The New Zealand Wars, but not used. Two Deal boats and six Deal boat men were brought to New Zealand by the Nelson Preliminary Expedition which entered Nelson Haven in November 1841. One of the boat men was James Smith Cross who became Nelson's second harbourmaster. (See letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999). Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Strictly tapu" (p. 22); "Group at Waimeo feast, Bay of Islands" (p. 20); "Native feast - or bone-scraping at the burial of the remains of several chiefs at Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 46); "Waipawa Valley, Poverty Bay, scene of the massacre by Te Kooti" (p. 47); "Here the moa feet impressions were found, Poverty Bay, Sept. 1871, D.L.M." (p. 51). There are two-image panoramas of the Thames goldfields and Napier. In this album they are not on following pages, but are separated. Barraud published in his New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive (London, 1877) p. 19. The accompanying text reads "Pohatura, or the Great Rock ... which rises 650 feet abruptly from the plain on the banks of the Waikato near Niho-o-te Kiore, is a celebrated pa of the Ngatiraukawa tribe". Description: Shows two foreground figures seated on the ground in front of a panoramic scene of surrounding hills, several with rockky outcrops. There are buildings of a pa at the extreme right. Mr Springer of the Whanganui Historical Society writes (AT 13/14/1, 20 August 1995): "If you can get a copy of the old Lands & Survey NZMS 1 series ... sheet N85 WAIOTAPU, you will be able to see approximately where he was when he made the sketch of the Paeroa Road. It was probably to the northwest of the Paeroa Range and trig, facing the 'precipitous ricky faces' shown. It's about 13km to the northeast of Lake Ohakuri on the Waikato River".
