The Bragge photograph (looking down to the Harbour from Hill Street taken in the 1880s) was identified from his horse-drawn carriage with his name and occupation emblazoned on the side. Description: Album chiefly containing views of the North Island of New Zealand, many taken by professional photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns. Images include one of a cricket match between an English team and the Wellington team, March 23-24 1888, at the Basin Reserve, showing spectators in the foreground, the players on the field, and buildings on the hill behind. There are a number of views of the Whanganui River, including a cave, a canoe with 5 men poling through rapids, a view of the river from Hiruharama, and a waterfall. At the end of the album there are images of Port Said, Malabar, and two newspaper photographs, one of Mrs J Milbourne (nee Maud Beatty, a member of the Pollard Opera Company), and William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, governor of New South Wales 1899-1900. Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s (some dated 1868), and about 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from comparison with handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51) Early photographs of Wellington show a view down Boulcott Street, a view probably from Boulcott Street looking down over `Rhodes Bay' (now the reclaimed area beyond Willis Street), and looking towards the city from Thorndon. One view in the North Island shows the Kinross residence in Napier. Most of the photographs are of central North Island, with particular emphasis on the volcanic areas around Lake Taupo, Lake Rotomahana, the Waikato River (including the Huka Falls and Aniwhaniwha Falls), Tokaanu, Ohinemutu and the Pink Terraces. Several scenes show military outposts and redoubts, including two of Captain Gilbert Mair "and his men" (the Arawa Flying Column), at Kaiteriria Pa, Rotokakahi "just arrived after a raid after Te Kooti"; and one of the interior of the pa "with Captain Mair's contingent". In the South Island scenes include Lyttelton, Akaroa Harbour, the Otira River and Gorge, Bealey River, the summit of Arthurs Pass, the Porters Pass Hotel, Taramakau River, Gibson's Quay at Hokitika, one of several small churches at Hokitika, and Hereford Street (Christchurch).
