Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'. Description: Shows a view across a river, to the settlement of Ngaruawahia on the far side, with the Māori King's residence, tents and huts and a red flag flying. A Māori man in traditional cloak surveys the scene from the centre foreground holding a taiaha. There is a paddlesteamer in the river at the right. Description: Album compiled by Spencer Perceval Talbot Nicholl when he was serving with the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry during the New Zealand wars. The photographs were chiefly taken by John Kinder and by Daniel Manders Beere, in the Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas. Many of the views have no captions, but can be identified in comparison with images known to have been taken by these photographers. Views identified include Mr. Ashwell's church at Taupiri (Rev. Benjamin Yate Ashwell); thatched buildings; flagstaff at Ngaruawahia; the monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; a carved stern-post of a waka; and a group of Maori men. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining. Description: Photographs, and newspaper cuttings, including cartoons, illustrating important events in the history of New Zealand, all relating to Sir Joseph Ward. Cuttings include photographs of the 11th annual meeting of the Dominion Rifle Association at Trentham, with caption describing the images, including names, taken from the New Zealand Free Lance, Saturday March 30, 1912. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward attended. The conquest of the South Pole, showing Captain Amundsen and his party, article from March 27, 1912. The Tramway Strike in Wellington which was terminated on February 5th, 1912, Sir Joseph Ward as mediator. A group of women belonging to the Women's Social & Political League, gathered to welcome home Mrs and Miss Seddon (March 30, 1912); and a group portrait of the committee of the league: Miss McLean, Mrs Mason, Mrs Moore, Mrs Seddon, Lady Ward, Mrs Keay-Brown, Mrs O'Sullivan. Articles on the retirement of Sir Joseph Ward, including a deputation to Awarua House to urge Sir Joseph to retain the position of Leader of the Liberal Party. Guests at the Premier Picnic, Auckland, entitled "His Excellency and Joseph Ward attend the big Oddfellows gathering. Various inaugural occasions, including the opening of the Government Sanatorium Baths at Rotorua; the turning of the first sod of the Waihi-Tauranga Railway; and turning the first sod of the Waipa Collieries private railway line, at Ngaruawahia The opening ceremony of the Jubilee Wing of Mother Aubert's Home of Compassion at Jerusalem on the Whanganui River in February 1912; and the opening of the New Plymouth Railway Station in 1902. Album includes an article from the London journal "The Gentlewoman : an ilustrated weekly journal for Gentlewomen" entitled "Lady Ward at home, at 'Awarua', Wellington, New Zealand" (March 22, 1913). Photographs of Lady Ward "wife of the Prime Minister of New Zealand"; a view of Lady Ward's house "Awarua" (Premier House in Tinakori Road); three generations: Sir Joseph Ward with his son and heir, and grandson; Miss Eileen Ward in fancy dress; and Mr Awarua Pat Ward, Sir Joseph Ward's youngest son.
