Description: Two sheets of the map of the central route railway, North Island main trunk railway, Turangarere section, each covering up to one mile distance along the Hautapu River. Milage is running from Turangarere towards Taihape. Both sheets show tracks, sheet 2 shows Roapoama's house opposite 70 chains and the track from Moawhango and Marton, while sheet 3 shows a U-turn bend in the track and good sites for platelayer's cottages. The lower diagram in each map is a cross section of the same distance, measuring heights, formation levels, distances and gradients. Maps signed by R W Holmes, 26/11/[18]89. 'Copy of PWD 16466'. Description: Thompson wrote his reminiscences in 1956, shortly before he died. He describes his family background, where they lived, his school days, mostly in Palmerston North, joining Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, in 1905 and moving to Nelson in 1906, Hokitika in 1910, Invercargill in 1911, Hastings in 1913, Wanganui from 1919 to 1924 when he worked for the Public Works Department in the King Country and in 1935 his move to Greymouth. Description: Copy of one sheet with three maps comprising a General Plan, Figure 1 and Figure 2. The General Plan shows the junction of the Mongatainoko [i.e. Mangatainoka] and Manawatu Rivers including the main road and Rossline to Napier. The provinces of Wellington and Hawke's Bay are marked and an area of Government land. Figure 1 is an enlargement of the Mongatainoko [i.e. Mangatainoka] River crossed by the main road. Includes two limits of deviation, a Maori track. An area of totara bush is marked. Figure 2 is an enlargement of the junction of the Tiraumea and Manawatu Rivers, the latter is crossed by the main road.
