Description: Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. No such settlements are identified around Wellington, Auckland, Napier or the East Coast north of Mahia. Description: Plots the Hauhau campaign and Te Kooti campaign from the New Zealand Wars. Shows central North Island and note reads "Land enclosed by yellow is that of the Maori King, boarded by the 'aukati' no European may cross on pain of death". Military engagements and massacres are identified across the map. Massacres are identified at Matawhero, Ohiwa Harbour, Whitecliffs and Waihi. Engagements are identified at Mohaka, Ngaatape, Puketapu, Turanga and Ahikerera Pa on the East Coast and Whakatane districts, and Rauparoa Pa, Otatau, Otoia, Wairou, Moturoa, Ruapuru and Te Ngutu o te Mana (identified as Tito Kowaru's own place). Shows "Nukumaru Pah taken 2 Feb 69". Orange lines represent Colonel Whitmore campaigns eg Campaign of Ngatapa Dec/Jan 1869 (Poverty Bay area), or Oct/Nov 1868 Whanganui area, April/ May 1869 Bay of Plenty area. Small yellow lines represent the New Zealand war battle campaigns by the ers and the New Zealand government against the Maori, especially those led by Colonel Whitmore eg Col. Whitmore's pursuit of prisoners July August 1868, St John's column Apr-May 1869, or Col. Whitmore Jan, Feb, April, May 1869 from Whanganui to New Plymouth. Shows overland road from Napier to Auckland. Some text on map e.g. "Whareongaonga, where the prisoners from the Chatham Islands landed in July 1860." Description: Sketch map of the coast from the town of Wanganui to Manawapou Pa at the mouth of the Manawapou River, near Hawera, naming and commenting on some topographical features such as rivers, including Wanganui, Waikotara, Whenuakura and Patea river, as well as lakes, sand dunes, bush and streams. Also marks the property of several settlers, including C Smith, Brooking, Newport, Martelli, Fairs, Magreth, J Watts, Westmere, T Hendley, Hendley, Goodson, Harper, Maxwell, Wright, Bryce, Musson, Campbell, Cunnabell, Ewens, Russell, Hewitt, Wickstead, J Parker, H Parker, D Peat. Also names many pa sites, some with accompanying notes, including large pa sites: Ohangai, Manutahi, Ohinemutu, Kaipa, Putiki and Kaiwaiki or Kiritahi. Small or old pa sites include: Karamea, Witikau, Te Awe, Oika, Ohairo, Tihoi, Otataumanu, Topetopenui, Taiataira or Te Rapiki & Areiahi, Ruakopiha, Perekamau, Te Maumonga, Te Ihupuku, Maenene, Ngaupaiaka, Pa Karaka, Aku, Motuhou, Waipuna, Aramoho, Waipakura, Upokongaro, Tunuwhire, Raorikia or Kawarapawa. Also show the Waiohoi Mill. Includes note which reads: The following Natives are regarded as friendly viz: At Maenene: Men - Peripi Raekawhata (who has 'rebel' written in pencil beside his name), Ruawhiti, Tamati Karoro, Karipa Te Hore, Hohepa Te Whitu, Putoko, Te Rou. Women - Mata Hihira, Heroria Haaraa, Hara Kohinei, Iwihoki Kohiwi, Mata, Meri te Ruarangi. [The two names Putoko and Terou have been crossed out]. At Pakaraka: Men - Rimutureiu Wai, Peina, Heremia, Hohepa Hemikitawhiti, Riwai, Wiremu Pena, Manakau. Women: Ruta Wairangi, Raimapapa, Pirihira Tapiki, Roka Pururangi, Meriana Te Atiawa, Ruiha. [The name 'Manakore' has been crossed out]. At Pukengaio: Men - Maka Taiapiti, Hata Tamarouia, Henare Pukeke, Hema Te Whakawhenua, Hemo Kaira, Paramena Tumahuki. Women - Hariata Te Rapu. A second note reads: A Te Ihupuku native named Pirimona, for some years a native policeman in Wanganui, is also said by the rebel prisoners to be well-disposed towards the government and to have been prevented from coming to town by the rest of the Ihupuku people. Written beside Waikotara River: may be entered by 20 ton vessels. (Note that several names on map difficult to decipher, and may not be spelt correctly). Description: Digital copy of coloured manuscript map showing land between the Mimi River and the settlement of Pukearuhe. Shows numbered land blocks labelled with names of Captain Messenger and the Taranaki Military Settlers. Also shown is the township near Pukearuhe called 'Clifton', streams, rivers and swamps. Also shows Maori reserves at the mouth of the Mimi River and at Waiti Beach. Unnamed pa sites are indicated. Scale is given as 30 chains to an inch. Annotations describe the land and suitability for farming and planting. Notabilia lists size and distances to the Redoubt at Pukearuhe from various places. Note on the reverse of the map reads 'A present to me by the settlers when visiting White Cliffs or Clifton in company with Mr Whitely [sic] the Wesleyan Missionary of New Plymouth in the year 1866. Poor Whitely the following year or somewhat later [was] ambushed and killed by the Maoris while on a similar visit, according to his usual custom'. The note is signed 'Edward W. Bawtree, Surgeon in the Army'. Original map: Ink and colour wash on dressed linen, coloured, scale [ca.1:23,760], 26 x 52cm. Annotation on lower right hand side of map reads 'Compiled from recent surveys by George Hatley [sic] Esqire and the topographical features of the country surveyed and filled in by W. H. Burgoyne. Clifton, 15th Febuary 1866'. Rev John Whiteley was killed when he was on his way to visit military settlers at White Cliff in 1869. Extended Title - Being the town and rural lands allotted to the Officers, Non Comm[an]d Officers and forty six of the men of No. 6 Capt[ain] W. B. Messenger's Company of Taranaki Military Settlers. Inscriptions: Verso - top right - 'A present to me by the settlers when visiting White Cliffs or Clifton in company with Mr Whitely [sic] the Wesleyan Missionary of New Plymouth in the year 1866. Poor Whitely the following year or somewhat later [was] ambushed and killed by the Maoris while on a similar visit, according to his work custom.' The note is signed 'Edward W.
