Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Important episode at Fiji, 27 Jul 1862, having recently arrived at Levuka, Captain Jenkins summoned the chiefs "to a formal meeting on board the Miranda for the purpose of conveying to them the decision of H.M. Ministers not to accept the sovereignty of the Fiji Islands, in terms drawn up by His Excellency Sir John Young". Includes text of declaration in English and Fijian. The Miranda stayed at Levuka most of Jul and Aug; entertained King Thankombau; description of Levuka. Wreck of the `Orpheus' described, Feb 1863. Description: This album was compiled by Second Lieutenant Spencely Noel Stanley Crump. It is a record of his time as a soldier in the New Zealand army during the Second World War. The record begins with photographs taken while training at Ngaruawahia Camp in September 1939. He and his company were transported to Egypt on the "Orion" where they underwent training at Maadi Camp. Also recorded are the rest and recreational facilities at the camp, as well as those at Helwan Camp, and trips to the pyramids. In 1940 he was with the army campaigning and preparing defences in the Western Desert. He was also sent to the Middle East Weapon Training School in Sarafand near Tel Aviv of which there are photographs as well as others of Palestine and Jerusalem. In 1941 he was sent to Greece and Crete. This part of the album also contains a page of photographs taken from a captured German paratrooper's camera. Following the campaigns in Greece and Crete, Crump returned to Egypt and took part in the war in Libya. There are several pages of photographs of Cairo and its citizens. Others are of nurses and patients at the British General Hospital at Geneifa, and the New Zealand General Hospital at Helwan where Crump went as a result of contracting pneumonia and developing infections in his wounds. In 1942 he returned to New Zealand on the hospital ship "Oranji". There are five pages of photographs taken on this trip. In New Zealand he was sent to the Soldiers Hospital in Rotorua for treatment. In 1943 he married. The album is well documented throughout, and most of Crump's many military associates are identified. A container of letters written by Crump while he was overseas was also donated with the album. The letters have been transferred to Manuscripts and Archives. In 1934 Spencely Noel Stanley Crump was a member of the New Zealand team to the Empire Games in London where he won a bronze medal in swimming. Sites from the New Zealand War include Te Rangihaeata's stronghold (1846), the site of a chapel and the colonial cemetery at Pauatahanui, military trenches (one named McKillops), the barracks of the 65th regiment, the officer's quarters, the Boulton's Hotel of 1847, Troopers Hill, isolated Maori grave along Paekakariki Hill Road, the landing stage of the 58th and 65th regiments, Tandy's constablulary's post and the Waitaha Maori at Ration Point. Description: Shows the mouth of a stream with sea beyond. Horses and soldiers in the foreground. Very similar to version at B-045-034 with title in the artist's hand 'Alexander's farm, looking seawards from base of hill on which we were camped, 23 January 1865'. Alexander's farm was on the Mowhanau Stream, South Taranaki, not the Patea River. Appears not to show the mouth of the Patea River, despite the title on the front. Title is not in the hand of the artist. The river shown is a shallow fordable stream and the cliffs on both sides do not match those around the much deeper Patea River in the 1860s.
