Description: Shows a view along the Wellington shoreline, looking north. Part of Barrett's Hotel is shown on the extreme left, beside a classical revival building. There are shops in the distance. A red-coated soldier leans against the door to Barrett's Hotel. A small rowboat is in the sea to the right of the road Title on engraved plate on frame. Artist attributed because of similarity of subject to Holmes' "Wellington Beach 1856" (A-032-040). The work is not as finished as that one however. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: The steamship `Tamahine' leaving Wellington on the 14th of November 1938. Taken from the deck of the Awatea, by an unidentified photographer. Inscriptions: Verso - By the number of cars on the deck one would suggest that holidays have started. This is taken frim the boat deck of the Awatea, the difference in size of the two ships is easily seen. 15/11/38 [probably the date of publication in the Evening Post newspaper] The steamship Tamahine was a Cook Strait ferry of 1989 tons. Description: Shows a view of Wellington and Wellington Harbour as far as the Hutt Valley. The view includes the Terrace and Terrace prison, the streets and buildings of Oriental Bay and Te Aro on the flat, including gasometers, chimneys and churches (St John's and St Peter's Willis Street), the houses on Mount Victoria, Somes Island. Three cows and a calf are attended by a man with a staff, in the foreground. The image is similar to that at C-030-025, "[Te Aro and Wellington Harbour]", but extends further on either side. The scale is very similar, but the images of the buildings are not identical. Unlike most other Aubrey works held in the Library, both of these pictures use some gum arabic in the foreground. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - C Aubrey 1888 Very similar to C-030-025, "[Te Aro and Wellington Harbour]", but includes detail on both sides missing in Te Aro and Wellingon Harbour. Unlike most other Aubrey works held by the Library, this work uses some gum arabic in the foreground. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour and gum arabic, 531 x 918 mm. Provenance: Possibly owned by Ivan Napier, Greytown, 1970s or early 1980s. In Harnett & Wedde winter antique auction, 1987, purchased Brierley's Ltd, Wellington.

Description: Shows a profile portrait of a three-masted sailing ship flying two flags from its mast tops. There is a steamship in the right distance, and Pencarrow Head and lighthouse in the left background. This painting was probably commissioned by the ship's three Wellington owners, or the Master Captain James Lee. The "Poneke" was built in Evans Bay, Wellington, in 1878 by John Rees George. She was 79.98 gross registered tons. Her length was 84.5 feet and beam was 18.9 feet. Initially registered at the port of Wellington on 19 March 1878, with her Master recorded as Stephen Ellis. She was owned by John Rees George, Civil engineer, 1878; Archibald McLeod, timber merchant, 1878-1880, William Waddell, Timber merchant and William Weir, timber merchant. Presumed to have foundered at sea with all hands (6) as she was not seen since being sighted off Greymouth. She had sailed from Onehunga on 11 June 1880. (Information from the seller, John Crowder, 1998) Accompanied by a loose card bearing the title "Poneke". To be mounted on the backing board. Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea.
