Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Wellington Harbour Board topographic and survey map of the Patent Slipway Company's property on Evans Bay Road, now known as Evans Bay Parade. The area includes sites of two slipways and jetties, engine rooms, engineering, blacksmith, boilerhouse, tinsmiths, paint, basket and upholstery workshops, general and bond stores, timber rack, brick garage and laundry. Respective building materials are listed. The boundary, a wharf and a limit of reclamation are marked with the total acreage to the outer boundary. Reservoirs, stormwater overflow and sewer drains are marked, as are property boundaries of post, rail and wire fences with the position of wooden dwellings, some outside of the Company's area on Kainui Road. Picket, board and iron fences are marked, as is a vegetable garden and fowl house. Includes high water marks by Ward in 1887, sites of dolphins, a beach, concrete wall and stone pitching. Evans Bay Road is described as bitumen and its width is given. Additions to the base map are various acreages and boundary measurements of the workshop and store areas of the Patent Slipway Company's property at Evans Bay. Acreages of hilly and flat land are totalled separately. A pencilled note gives valuations for the acreage 3.2.20 at 4000 pounds sterling an acre, also for 'Northeast triangle' at 3200 pounds sterling. Railways album 10

Description: Album of publicity photographs, taken by unidentified photographers, chiefly in 1935 At the beginning of the album there are a large number of photographs of the buildings, and crowds at a race meeting at the Trentham Racecourse. (See article by O.N. Gillespie in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue, 12, March 1, 1935). The album has many publicity photographs, designs for railway advertisements and posters, all showing the advantages of travel by rail. The advertisements include methods for travel savings: `Buy travel stamps. Travel savings N.Z.R. 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/-, from railway stations & booking offices'; also `Start saving to-day for your trip away...'. Other posters advertise cheaper travel in the off-season, including summer holidays at the Hermitage, with low combined rail and motor fares" as well as advertising full season trips to tourist destinations. There is one photograph of a programme [?] for "New Zealand Authors' Week, 1936. Souvenir". Near the start of the album there is a large group of views at Flock House, agricultural college at Bulls. They show pig farming, dairy cows, sheep, lucerne for pasture and vegetable growing (See New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue 12, March 1, 1935); and in one of these Lord Bledisloe is bending down examining pasture (See New Zealand Railways magazine, Vol. 9, Issue 11, February 1, 1935) There are a few individual and group portraits, but only one or two are identified. Interior photographs of Union Steam Ship Company luxury liners Rangatira and Aorangi, are shown as individual pictures, as well as in a montage (published in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 10, issue 4, July 1, 1935). For example, one view shows Kebble's house, now the site of the Grand Opera House. Views in the postcards are identified, but no dates are given. Description: Planning map of the area from Burnham Wharf to Evans Bay Road. Existing roads are named and a proposed road is marked on an area of reclaimed land. Rongotai Terrace is shown at the site of the proposed airport runway. Blocks of land are prominently colour coded and are referred to in extensive Certification of Title schedules which include total areas. A second Wellington Harbour Board schedule, by D.P. plan references, refers to each block of land. Includes a survey of the sea bed and the reclamation limit is marked, as is the low water mark. The boundary of the harbour bed vested in Wellington Harbour Board M3187 is marked. Area A, adjacent to Miramar Wharf and Aberdeen Quay, includes the the limit of the 1 in 7 batter cut. Topographic features are of slopes and a knoll. Images include one of a cricket match between an English team and the Wellington team, March 23-24 1888, at the Basin Reserve, showing spectators in the foreground, the players on the field, and buildings on the hill behind. There are a number of views of the Whanganui River, including a cave, a canoe with 5 men poling through rapids, a view of the river from Hiruharama, and a waterfall.
