Description: A whare and trees in the left foreground, a canoe being rowed by three men on the lake in the centre and the White Terraces in the background, with clouds of steam above them. Probably one of the earliest depictions of the Terraces On the verso is a poem in the artist's hand, to his wife, Rangi Kawau (Rangi Koa), with marginal notes on the Maori words, in the hand of Edward Shortland. Inscriptions: Mount recto - beneath image - Title in ink in the artist's hand Compare two other version of this drawing by Merrett. One dating from 1842 is in the British Library's Grey Albums (Add. Ms 19953 f. 99, pl. 268) an ink and pencil drawing entitled 'Rotomahana, one of the Rotorua Lakes with a view of the hot springs and the ascent to it by natural steps of salyx'; also the Turnbull Library's A-089-008, an ink and wash sketch, almost identical to this one. Description: Includes photographs of Maori artefacts in museum context. Possibly created by James Edge-Partington, an anthropologist who studied artefacts in New Zealand and the Pacific. This volume is in the same style of album, with similar photographs and articles as Webster album 4 (PA1-o-519) which has Edge-Partington's named bookplate inside the front cover. Studies of a variety of artefacts including an instrument giving a decoy call for kiwi; a sea leopard's tooth carved and worn as a pendant (from Stewart Island); whale teeth pendants; weapons; tools; carved waka, prows of waka; carved meeting houses; Te Kooti's house "Te Waho"; carved storehouses; a Maori kite; eel traps and fish hooks. The artefacts are from various collections in New Zealand and overseas, including the Chapman Collection, the Hamilton Collection, the Hocken Collection and General Robley's Collection. Description: Marsden, his eyes closed, a Bible in his left hand, standing slightly left of centre in a makeshift pulpit draped with black cloth, preaching to a congregation of Maori and Pakeha men, women and children at Rangihoua, Bay of Islands. At least two of the congregation are also holding Bibles. Maori dwellings and canoes beyond on the beach, with European rowboats also pulled up on the beach. The original painting from which the reproductions were taken - a watercolour according to information supplied at the time of the donation, but the reproduction looks more like an oil, and oils were the artist's normal medium - was sent to America, presumably to the Bible Society in New York. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Leonard C. Mitchell Commissioned by the Bible Society to mark the 150th anniversary of the occasion depicted and said to be one of only two reproductions made from the original watercolour, the other held by the Bible Society in Wellington. Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. There are also land deeds and papers of W Howard Hill and William Colenso. Notebooks, correspondence, and papers on the history, geology, and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on moa, Captain St George's diary, Shakespearean controversy, and other topics. Papers include notes and papers on geology, history of the Kaingaroa-Taupo area, Te Kooti campaign, and early history of New Zealand; correspondence from W Colenso to Mrs E Hill. Also journal for 1897 which deals largely with school inspecting in Hawke's Bay. Henry Thomas Hill was the Inspector for Schools for Hawke's Bay and the East Coast.
