Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Later photographs again with the train often in view show timber felling and milling, and views of the Arapuni hydroelectic power station. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Shows a view of Lake Taupo with Maori houses and huts, and a raised storehouse on the foreshore in the foreground. Some houses are surrounded by fences of thin branches. Two pigs graze in the left foregorund, and the foreground vegetation includes two cabbage trees. In the distance, Mount Ngauruhoe smokes, and Ruapehu is snow-covered. This watercolour was painted by either William or and John Doubleday in 1885, while they were travelling around the world - on doctor's orders to cure lung infections. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Description: Postcard shows a Maori settlement on the shores of Lake Taupo, with the outlet in the foreground being the source of the Waikato River. The mountains of the Central Plateau are in the distance. A plume of smoke issues from Ngauruhoe. There is a cabbage tree at the far right, and beyond it are whare and a pataka. Flax grows in the foreground, and there are tree ferns across the water at the left. Verso shows an engraving by W R Bock, of Mt Earnslaw, head of Lake Wakatipu, with a Maori prow carving overarching it. Scene on recto is similar to the chromolithograph by Thomas Ryan: "Lake Taupo and Waikato River, with Tongariro and Ruapehu" (1893), published in the NZ Graphic Christmas number 1893, page 11.
