Daniel P Parker is recorded in the Wise's Post Office directories as an engineer in Coromandel from 1902 to 1930. Between 1906 and 1911 he is also recorded as a photographer. Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Railway trains, locomotives, and carriage interiors in New Zealand, Britain and North America. The Volcanic Plateau and Wairakei geothermal project. Most of the album shows ships on Auckland Harbour and at the wharves, including the launch 'Manu', used to provide "Captain Cook Cruises" circa 1980, and the refurbished waterfront and cast iron gates near the Ferry Terminal Building. There are also shots of people taking the sun in this area. The final section records some of the demolition and rebuilding in Auckland during the 1980s. Rationalist House also features. Description: Tylden began writing his reminiscences in 1907 and continued till 1913; he writes of his childhood, education, military training in England and coming to New Zealand in 1862 with the 70th Regiment. He gives full accounts of skirmishes in the Waikato, Wanganui and New Plymouth areas from 1863 to 1866. Following his discharge in 1868 he returned to farm in the Pukekohe area until 1881 and practised law in Auckland from 1882 to 1912. Description: Part of an account written by James Gidley telling of his experiences in New Zealand and Rarotonga, 1931-1938. Describes Gidley's time in Auckland, his trip to Wellington, voyage to Rarotonga and his experiences in Rarotonga. The account details his search for work in Auckland and his experiences working both in Auckland and on several dairy farms in the Auckland and Waikato regions, such events as the visit of a faith healer to Auckland as well as describing various places he stayed, his attempts to get to know women and his own eating disorders. In his description of his time in Rarotonga he makes some comments on living conditions, other white residents, relations between the races, prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and details his attempts to have sexual relations with Rarotongan women. Description: Photographs of hydroelectric power plants on the Waikato River, at Ohakuri, Waipapa and Aratiatia. Other photographs show the permanent villages at Maraitai and Wairakei, and in particular the community halls built for those villages. The photographs were taken ca 1963 by a Ministry of Works staff photographer. Also included are photographs of Aratiatia power station taken by Rod Cook. Collection also includes aerial photographs of Auckland taken during World War II by an unknown photographer. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Some of these photographs were progress photographs to send to the Head Office Hydro Design in Wellington, but most were taken for a display of Government architectural design work. The Ministry of Works operational centre was at Mangakino, with later a construction group at Aratiatia. Rodney Cook was project architect at Mangakino and then Aratiatia from 1961 to 1964.
