Description: Two soldiers, one standing, one on horseback, gazing in the direction of a large wooden-fenced fort on the right of the Mangapiko Stream, with the palisades of the opposing Maori pa just visible on the brow of a hill in the distance. There is a low bridge across the creek, with a road leading up the right bank towards the fort. Probably copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. A Māori man in traditional cloak surveys the scene from the centre foreground holding a taiaha. There is a paddlesteamer in the river at the right. Description: Battle scene with groups of soldiers from the Forest Rangers and the 65th Regiment, plus General Cameron and staff, with guns firing and horses, several dead or wounded men, Maori whares in the background and bush and hills. Soldiers are identified by name and the death of General Nixon is shown. The man directing the Forest Rangers is likely to be von Tempsky. After an original by J.A.Wilson, a witness to the battle, and depicted in this view. A copy of the original and a description of the battle is published in Cowan, J. The New Zealand wars. Vol. 1 p. 345. Lieutenant McDonnell is likely to be Thomas McDonnell (1832-1899), noted for his heroism at Rangiaowhia. His brother, William McDonnell (1839-1919?) also fought in the New Zealand wars, but in the Wanganui area. Description: Unidentified group of Maori men and women alongside a surveyor's tripod on the military road at Pokeno, Waikato, photographed between 1861-1863 by William Temple. In "An illustrated history of New Zealand, 1820-1920", Judith Binney interprets this image as a deliberate attempt by a group of Maori men and women to stop work on the military road from Auckland to the Waikato which was initiated by the Crown in late 1861. Description: Looking along the top of an earth wall at right. There is a trench to the left of it, and the left wall of the trench has regular arched niches in it. In the right background is a lake with canoes on it. Two cabbage trees are on the left Similar to ink sketches of the same subject, with the addition of the arch-shaped niches. The defence works were built on the ridge between July and November 1863, by the Waikato supporters of the Maori King movement, in preparation for a confrontation with British troops under General (Sir) Duncan Alexander Cameron.
