Description: Shows a view of the head of the Waikato River, looking south across Lake Taupo to Mounts Tongaririo, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu in the distance. On the right bank, in the foreground, is a Maori pa, with a pataka or food store shown most prominently. Both banks of the river are densely covered in trees, including pine and cabbage trees, and bush. A canoe or waka with six occupants glides away from the pa across the river. Description: Postcard shows a Maori settlement on the shores of Lake Taupo, with the outlet in the foreground being the source of the Waikato River. The mountains of the Central Plateau are in the distance. A plume of smoke issues from Ngauruhoe. There is a cabbage tree at the far right, and beyond it are whare and a pataka. Flax grows in the foreground, and there are tree ferns across the water at the left. Verso shows an engraving by W R Bock, of Mt Earnslaw, head of Lake Wakatipu, with a Maori prow carving overarching it. Scene on recto is similar to the chromolithograph by Thomas Ryan: "Lake Taupo and Waikato River, with Tongariro and Ruapehu" (1893), published in the NZ Graphic Christmas number 1893, page 11. Description: Shows the Rev. B. Y. Ashwell's first Mission Station, at Pepepe or Taupiri, located beside the Waikato River. There are high, bush-clad hills behind the house which has a fenced garden. Description: Taupiri Mountain in the background, with the riverbank to the left and houses in the distance at the foot of the mountain. Copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, now in the Hocken Library in E. A. Williams' Notebook, p. 37. The Turnbull has a slide of this work (under the same title as Hamley's). Description: Shows rocky outcrop Pohaturoa near Atiamuri with the Waikato River between steep cliffs. In the foreground are three houses and carriage drawn by four horses on a road leading from a bridge across the river on the right. Probably the original for the engraving published in New Zealand: graphic and descriptive... London: Sampson Low,... 1877 pg 19. Inscribed with the title "Pohaturoa". The accompanying text reads "Pohaturoa, or the Great Rock...which rises 650 feet abruptly from the plain in the banks of the Waikato near Niho-o-te Keore, is a celebrated pa of the Ngatiraukawa tribe." A very similar watercolour of the same scene with minor foreground differences with the title "Pohuturoa near Atiamuri, 1875" was sold at McArthur's Auction, 10 May 1985, Lot 28.
