Description: This cartoon is about Auckland Mayor Sir Dove-Meyer Robinson's plan to have a rapid rail and bus service in Auckland derailed by Wellington bureaucrats. The cartoon also shows Auckland beating Wellington in the Ranfurly Shield. The lower scenes feature an angry Dove-Meyer but the last scene shows him negotiating for Wellington's approval by doing a deal including the Ranfurly Shield and Bryan Williams (rugby player) and John Walker (athlete). Description: Entitled 'Wellington at the bay' with the word 'bay' crossed out so that the title reads 'Wellington at bay'. An angry bird (an eagle?) attacks a Wellington rugby player who has been threatening to steal 'Hawkeye's nest egg' from its nest in a tree behind him. The nest egg is the Ranfurly Shield and 'Hawkeye' refers to the fact that Hawkes Bay currently holds it. In fact Canterbury did take the Ranfurly Shield 18-11 from Hawkes Bay on 27 September 1969.
