Description: Portraits of elderly Maori women with facial tattos (moko kauwae) most taken by Marti Friedlander for Michael King's book `Moko,' first published in 1972. All of the subjects lived in the North Island of New Zealand. Most of them are identified. Photographs relating to Te Puea Herangi. These include - Portraits of Te Puea at different times during her life. Photographs relating to her work, such as the group of orphaned children she fostered after the flu epidemic of 1918. The construction of the ceremonial waka (canoe) Ngatokimatawhaorua. Building works at Turangawaiwai Marae, in particular the meeting house Mahinarangi (1929), and the Maori monarch's official residence, Turongo House including the opening of this in 1938. Te Puea's tangi, and her coffin being carried up Taupiri Mountain. Maori monarch's include - King Mahuta Tawhiao (1855?-1912). King Koroki (1909-1966). Queen Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu (1931-2006). Maori soldiers from the period of the First World War. The Parliament House (Turangawaiwai House) at Ngaruawahia (built 1912-1919). Description: The first map is a plan of Turangawaewae Marae, Waikato, showing the pa site, including Turongo House, Mahingarangi House, Kimi-kimi Dining Hall, octagon office, flag poles, recreation grounds and lawns. Arrows from the river road to Hamilton East go through and lead out of the pa. The second map is partly a locality map, but also includes numbered sections, with acreages, west and southwest of Turangawaewae, while arrows show movement through the pa. Description: The korupe (carving over the window frame) at Mahina-a-Rangi meeting house at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia. It shows the Tainui canoe (ca. 1350) with its captain, Hoturoa. Above the canoe is Te Hoe-o-Tainui, a famous paddle, the kete (kit) given to Whakaoterangi by a tohunga of Hawaiki, the bird Parakaraka (front) who was able to see in the dark, and another bird who warned of approaching daylight. Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber, chiefly between 1934 and 1947, but including copies of some of his earlier photographs. Views include trips in the North and South Islands, and views of his home and family, especially in Whiteman's Valley Road and the area around Silverstream. Also various scenes of floods (Hutt River), and storm damage. Photographs associated with roads and railways include steam locomotives, tunnels, bridges and viaducts, some under construction. Among the trip photographs are views of Ngaruawahia, including King Koroki's house (opened in 1938) and the Maori Parliament House.
