Description: Mount Taranaki on the left in the distance. Two cottages in a clearing backed by tall trees in the middle ground, with fenced in gardens. In the foreground a field with sheep and cattle and hay being hauled on a cart by oxen. The artist is very likely to be Hannah Stephenson Smith who drew views of a later family home in Taranaki, and was also the sister of the author of the book in which this view appeared as the frontispiece. Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. Description: Photogprahs of New Zealand circa 1890s to 1900s, probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first sequence includes scenes around Auckland harbour, including Rangitoto Onehunga, with one view of passengers on board the ferry `SS Takapuna'. One photograph shows a group of young Maori standing on the bank of the Whanganui River (four young men under an umbrella). Wellington area views of Pahautanui (Pauatahanui), Horokiwi, Lyall Bay and the Wellington Heads. On page 873 (the album pages run from 856 to 895), there is a postcard with heads of George William Barltrop and his wife Emma Jane Barltrop, with a collage of images relating to the Missions to Seamen. Slipped beneath the postcard is the death notice for Emma Jane Barltrop (died 24 September 1954). There are views of the Rimutakas from the railway line; a flock of sheep being herded along a road in palmerston North; three people standing outside a wooden bungalow in Palmerston North; and there is a view of another house in Feilding. The river mouth at Oroua; the grounds of the Wanganui Race Course (with white swans on the lake; a woman feeding a peacock, and a woman under an umbrella, walking on rail tracks beside the sea at Castlecliff; followed by three views from a boat on the Whanganui River, one a view of Upokongaro, with the church spire just visible, and two of groups of Maori waiting on the riverbank. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1880s by various photographers including James Bragge and Josiah Martin. Photographs of the Manawatu Gorge were taken by James Bragge, some of which show the horse and carriage in which Bragge carried his equipment. There is one photograph of English explorer and adventurer Captain Speedy who spent many years in Abyssinia and other parts of Africa, and who came to New Zealand in 1864, where he fought with the Waikato Militia before returning overseas. He is shown wearing Abyssinian costume (p 15).
