Description: Looking north along the coastline towards Maunganui, with ships in the harbour, infantry and cavalry on the beach to the left, a Maori canoe and a rowboat in the foreground, the rowboat being hauled out to sea off the mudflats by sailors. Boxes and barrels are on the shore and military tents can be seen in the distance, with a redoubt on a foreland further off Copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, 'The beach at Tauranga, 26 April 1864' in the Hocken Library, p. 31 of Williams' sketchbook (now dismantled and separately mounted). Description: Eleven prints: three of Waiomiti pa site in New Plymouth which is now partly covered by the Redixmixt Concrete Co; three of Rewarewa pa site near the Waiwakaiho River one of which shows R Allan standing next to an ancient cabbage tree; two of a Maori burial and pa site next to what is now Clemow Road, New Plymouth, one of which shows Mr Bishop, whose garden is adjacent to the site, next to a gravestone; Paritutu showing the chemical works which is now on the land next to it; the dismantling of Poutama carved house at Karatia (Galatea) on the Whanganui River in the summer of 1967/1968. The carvings were taken to Koroniti and the rest was to be moved to another site; the old house at Te Marua captioned that it was later remodelled by someone called Molloy and photographed by James Chapman-Taylor. Description: Photographs of the staff and pupils of New Brighton Public School. The staff are back row (left to right) Mr Chapman, Miss Foster and Miss McKinney and front row Miss Ormandby, Mr Bishop and Miss Brown. The two photographs of the school children show the upper standards and the infants. The advertisements are for Royal Colors Tobacco manufactured by the T C Williams Co of Richmond, Virginia; Sylvia Starch; Aulsebrook and Co Cream Crackers and Cream Sandwich Biscuits; and Star Lady's Bicycles with a description of the latest model in 1903. Three photographs of sketches by Mrs Wicksteed from the residence of her husband John Tylston Wicksteed on Mount Eliot of New Plymouth in 1843. Description: From the site of modern New Plymouth, looking past the mouth of the Huatoki Stream south along the beach line towards the Sugarloaf Islands and Paritutu. In the foreground is a group of Maori with a bullock dray being urged along, a man with a pig leg-roped and several other groups, including two men who appear to be performing a haka. Further along the beach, a boat is landing, close to several canoes, there are one or two European houses and a large flagpole for signalling. The small stone cottage with pointed gable closest to Paritutu on the left belonged to C. W. Richmond and his wife Emily Elizabeth Richmond. Strutt has used parts of this drawing as the basis for his oil 'On the beach, Onehunga, 1856' The Richmond's stone cottage is still standing, next to New Plymouth Public Library. Scenes of Parihaka, especially with relationship to the 1881 incident, include views of the pa (with Te Whiti's house visible); the Rahotu volunteer camp, the Rahotu Redoubt; Fort Rolleston; Sentry Hill; Pungarehu officers' quarters and redoubt; Nelson Camp; the Taranaki Rifles and Wellington Navals. Scenic views in the area show Mount Egmont, Bell's Falls, the `Meeting-of-the-Waters', White Cliffs, Sugar Loaf Islands, the New Plymouth breakwater, and views of the New Plymouth Recreation Ground.
