Description: Photographs of the Nelson Region, Wellington Harbour, Featherston, Ruamahanga Valley and the Rimutaka Hill Road, probably taken by George William Barltrop in 1899 (Identification from other albums in this sequence). None of the people in photographs are identified, but include several scenes with a woman and her husband; a group portrait at a wedding; two older women in a garden; a picnic group (6 women, one man and three children); two women carrying baskets of plants, with a man wheeling a bicycle (on the road to the Nelson Reservoir); and three young boys in a garden. A sequence of twelve photographs includes two men, members of the 2nd Contingent, at a military camp (possibly in the Nelson area), preparing to leave for the South African War, in 1899; rows of horses near tents at the camp; soldiers marching; a Nelson street with a banner reading `For Queen and country. Description: A view of Nelson Harbour from the hills above, and possibly from where William Fox was living. The Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island are visible, with snow-capped mountains in the distance. A two-masted ship and two waka can be seen in Nelson Haven, as well as two other vessels out in Tasman Bay. There are figures unloading barrels on the shore, and two houses in the foreground on the left Accompanied by a photocopied letter, originally adhered to the back of the painting, from Dawn Smith of the Nelson Provincial Library, dated 1982. It suggests the (unsigned) work is by William Fox, and that the handwriting on the recto is that of a Miss Longueville, some of whose works the Nelson Museum holds Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - View of the harbour, Nelson NZ [in ink] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Album chiefly containing views of the Nelson Region, including ships in the harbour, Boulder Bank, a hotel in Moutere, a partially built steamship being transported to sea, and a Thanksgiving service by the Bishop of Nelson for safe arrival. Other areas covered include two images of Wellington, one of Sale (Victoria, Australia), several of Switzerland and of Odense in Denmark (taken when the photographer travelled back to Denmark in 1873).
