Description: Notebooks, correspondence, and papers relating to the history, geology and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on Maori canoes, art and history, the moa, education, hydro-electricity, the Shakespearean controversy, his political beliefs, and other subjects. There are also land deeds and papers of W Howard Hill and William Colenso. Notebooks, correspondence, and papers on the history, geology, and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on moa, Captain St George's diary, Shakespearean controversy, and other topics. Papers include notes and papers on geology, history of the Kaingaroa-Taupo area, Te Kooti campaign, and early history of New Zealand; correspondence from W Colenso to Mrs E Hill. Also journal for 1897 which deals largely with school inspecting in Hawke's Bay. Henry Thomas Hill was the Inspector for Schools for Hawke's Bay and the East Coast. Description: Shows a view looking down to a hollow area between hills, with raupo huts and tents collected in and around the hollow. Soldiers in red jackets stand around in small groups. There are walking tracks going up the background slopes, and a fence has been made going up the hill on the left. This painting is not titled by the artist, and bears a strong resemblance to another watercolour by Park, entitled in pencil at lower right "Napier". Both works are shown (on pages 74 and 76) of Nola Easdale's "Kairuri; the measurer of the land" (1988), held at NZ&P q526.9 EAS 1988. Randal Springer, Wanganui historian, (AT 13/14/1, 30 April 1997) said that there was no military encampment "near Wanganui" in 1847; it was all in Wanganui itself, at the Rutland and York stockades. The topography is also wrong for Wanganui. The evidence suggests that the view is of Napier in the late 1850s, rather than of Wanganui. Description: News item from Napier announcing an incident in Poverty Bay, four miles from Napier, involving Te Kooti and his men, and Captain Reginald Biggs who had been pursuing him for some time. The ship "Success" brought surviving settlers to Napier. This preliminary report suggests that 28 Europeans and 9 friendly Maori were killed. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s) on galley proof..
