Salmon album 11

Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Photographs taken by Sidney Street of people and scenes in New Zealand between 1927 and 1938, relating to holidays he had in different parts of the country. Places include Wanganui City and the Wanganui River; Ruapehu, including the skifields; Feilding; Hamilton and the Waikato River, including bridges and hydro-electric dams; Wairakei; Rotorua including lakes and thermal areas, Maori villages and buildings; Taranaki and Hawera; Christchurch, Timaru and Waimate. Also includes photographs of pioneer aviators Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm and Maurice Buckley, and their planes. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Arrangement: All prints were originally in one album which was cut up by the donor prior to their arrival at the Library. Description: Album of photographs taken around the Taupo District. Many are contacts from 35mm film; some are prints, taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1955 and 1965. Most of the images are indicative of John Salmon's interest in photography. Examples can be seen in the series of images taken in various lights on the Taupo Golf Links including on misty mornings, the "Picket fence" of fishermen standing at the mouth of the Waitahanui River Mouth on Lake Taupo, a series showing Pohutu Geyser playing, views of the Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls, and views of Mission Bay where he spent camping holidays. Three views show Maori ramparts on Motutaiko Island (Lake Taupo), several show dwellings at Waihi, and one shows a group of Maori children in a hot pool at Whakarewarewa. Description: Album of photographs, chiefly taken by Sir Thomas Hunter. Many of the images are of tramping, camping and climbing holidays with friends and family, both in the North Island (Lake Waikaremoana, the far north, and in the Ruapehu and Taupo Districts), and the South Island (Greenstone River, gold sluicing and gold panning at Moonlight, Queenstown and Wanaka). Most scenes state the location, but very few people are identified, and then only by Christian name. Description: Shows a view of the head of the Waikato River, looking south across Lake Taupo to Mounts Tongaririo, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu in the distance. On the right bank, in the foreground, is a Maori pa, with a pataka or food store shown most prominently. Both banks of the river are densely covered in trees, including pine and cabbage trees, and bush. A canoe or waka with six occupants glides away from the pa across the river. The Central Plateau with Mount Ruapehu, and other snowy peaks is shown.The vegetation in the left foreground includes toetoe. on the shore in the middle distance is a partly-built boat, probably the Victoria, a steamer launched July 1874 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - EAC / 1874 A similar view from the same spot, dated 1874 by C D Barraud is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. It is possibly the original for Barraud's chromolithograph 'Lake Taupo' published in New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive (London, 1877), opp. p. 20. Description: "Illustrating geological formations, Vol 2". Black & white photographs showing the geology and geomorphology of the Rotorua area, taken while George Leslie Adkin was attending a New Zealand Geological Survey Staff Conference, May 9-22, 1948. Includes images of a thermal spring at Ohaki (near Rotorua), the Hinemaiai Stream; Lakes Taupo and Rotoaira, aerial views of the Tongariro volcanic complex showing Mt Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe with the Waco plane used for the flights; the Tikitere thermal area; Lake Rotoiti; the ignimbrite gorge of the Waikato River at the Maraetai dam site; Whakarewarewa; Maggie Papakura's house at Tuhoromatakaka, Whakarewarewa. He later visited Napier and Hastings (Sept 3-7, and 15-20, 1948), and has images showing Napier City; the shingle beach at the breakwater, Napier; Ahuriri Bluff, and the Manawatu Gorge. On Sept 9th 1948 he took photographs of the Wellington Peninsula from Parkvale Road to Mt Kaukau, and from Mt Kaukau showing the Wellington City hill system and its topographical features.
