Description: Postcard with a photo-mechanical reproduction of a drawing of an amended design for the proposed monument for Maori soldiers designed by Auckland sculptor W H Feldon, 16 Feb 1920 showing additional portraiture panels. On top on the monument is a Maori warrior. The memorial was erected to commemmorate the sons of the Te Arawa people who fought and died in World War One. It was unveiled by the Duke of York in Feb 1927. Words, pictures and symbols tell the story of the arrival of the Te Arawa waka at Maketu and the tribes' voyage to the 20th century. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Description: Album of photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon, including many contacts from 35 mm film, chiefly related to Wellington Camera Club outings. Others relating to photographic outings relate to the Photographic Society of New Zealand, Palmerston North regional meetings in October and November 1956. Many of the photographs show his interest in different lights and shapes, and he often gives details of lenses and filters used. Examples are winter light and shade at the Massey Memorial, a ploughed field near Palmerston North, the new entrance foyer and stairs when the Easterfield Science Block opened at Victoria University of Wellington in June 1959, still life images, flowers, cloud formations, ripples on sand, and light and shade along the Wellington Wharves. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, between 1900 and 1905. The images follow on from McIntosh album 15, (these are pages 815-835) starting at Opunake (a church building). Pihama (a memorial to members of the crew of the barque Lizzie Bell which was wrecked off Oeo, 24th July 1901), a view of the Oeo Hotel (F. Morgan, proprietor), and a view of the mast of the Lizzie Bell standing as a memorial at Pihama. These are followed by a panorama of Parihaka (p. 822-823), and a portrait of a man named Ruru, at Parihaka. The rest of the album has scenes in the Auckland area, including a view of Queen Street in which the chemist shop of Charles J Ratgen is clearly visible. A series of images show various Maori artifacts on display at the Auckland Museum. Scenery in Auckland includes the Auckland Domain, Epsom, Tamaki, Auckland Harbour, Rangitoto, St Heliers, Mount Hobson and Mount Eden. Two church buildings are seen, one at Opunake, and the remains of a stone church at Tamaki. A group of photographs show horse-drawn carriages decorated with flowers for a floral fete (p 835-838). Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission.
