Shows the sites of the King George V Memorial Health Camp, several areas of Church Mission Grant land, the Catholic Church Mission Station, Maori Church, pa, memorial to Te Rauparaha, schools, the hospital and sanitorium reserves and a mill. Includes dates when the Catholic Mission Station was opened and dates when the church, presbytery and school were built. Streets and streams are named and the old course of the Otaki River is marked as is the borough boundary and built up areas. A reference key shows numbered sites of interest. Description: A two-storied wooden mill, the mill-wheel to its left, bushes in the foreground, a fence and open fields with a cabbage tree beyond. Shows the Otaki Maori Church of England Mill, "Hadfield's Mill", built 1850, a flourmill. There was a second mill at Otaki, the Pukekaraka Catholic mill, built 1854, established after local Maori had been sent to Sydney to be trained in its use. The Catholic mill had a much larger iron mill-wheel than the smaller wooden wheel shown here. The mill was located on Mill Road, Otaki. Description: Manihira Te Ra Purewa Royal, known as Hira, was born in Otaki in 1932, and has lived there all her life, except when at boarding school. Recalls belonging to the Takarore whanau, which includes the families Hohipuha, Raika, Te Waiata, and Nikora (Nicholls). Mentions the Te Horo cheese factory, the Rahui dairy factory, milk at school, and milk delivered in cans. Talks about school and boarding at Hukarere in Napier, her teachers, the principal, Miss Hunter, prayers, strictness, duties, other pupils. Mentions her 11 children, her whangai (foster) daughter and her brothers and sisters. Recalls leaving school in 1949, marrying in 1950, living on the marae, then on Miss Lochore's property. Mentions using a copper washer and an outside hand wringer. Talks about their home in Otaki, built using a Maori Affairs Loan in 1954, and later extended. Talks about the family benefit. Mentions her mother-in-law, Whakarato Royal, who lived with them for 26 years. Refers to the Otaki Maternity Home, where mothers rested for 14 days after birth. Refers to Playcentre involvement. Talks about working for Koha Ora, at Kimberley Hospital and the Otaki Children's Health Camp. Description: The memorandum book gives a little background on Ronaldson, instructions on conducting oneself on board ship and exercises on practising religion. The diary begins 26 August 1845 and ends 12 May 1850 when Ronaldson sighted the Isle of Wight on his return voyage to England. It includes much material on Wanganui Maori as well as descriptions of shipboard life between New Zealand and Australia on the `Sisters' (1849) and from Sydney to London on the `Kate' (1850), and his stay in Sydney.
