Description: Letters and journal of Anne Catherine Wilson, edited by M G Armstrong, with appendices, list of mss and printed sources consulted, genealogical notes re Wilson and Hawker families, photographs (photocopies) of family members and residences. Photocopies of holograph letters of Anne to her husband, 1835-1838; and photocopy of Anne's shipboard diary for 1832. Anne Wilson was the wife of the missionary, John Alexander Wilson who was attached to the Church Missionary Society. The couple left England on board the `Camden', a convict vessel bound for NSW in 1932, and arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1833. Anne spent most of the next five years at the mission station at Puriri, near Thames, with other missionary wives involved in raising her children, school teaching and household chores. She was constantly separated from her husband who spent long periods travelling through troubled areas of Tauranga, Matamata and Roturua. The harsh life took its toll on Anne, and after a long illness she died at Tauranga in Nov 1838. Source of title - Supplied title Other Titles - My hand will write what my heart dictates... Description: The memorandum book describes Ronaldson himself, instructions on how to conduct yourself on board ship and what appear to be exercises on aspects of practising religion, and other matters. The diary begins 26 August 1845 until 12 May 1850 when Ronaldson sighted the Isle of Wight on his voyage to England and includes much material on Wanganui Maori as well as descriptions of shipboard life between New Zealand and Australia on the Sisters (1849), and from Sydney to London on the Kate (1850).
