Description: Volume one of 'The 9.5 am' Feb 1902 to Jan 1903. Contains whimsical articles about political and 'colonial' life. Includes jokes, poems, extracts, and illustrations. In an inscription on the inside cover of this volume, Johannes Andersen describes himself as "Editor, article writer, anecdotist, P.D. et hoc gen an". Includes images of people, buildings and landscapes in the Canterbury, Otago and Southland Regions including: - The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings captioned as "Offices of the 9.5 am". - Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula. - Several photographs of F M B Fisher who "left with the 19th contingent April 19, 1902" and a poem about Fisher leaving for the South African War, 1899-1902 (aka Boer War) titled 'A Farewell'. Also an image of "The Tenth Contingent passing City Council Chambers". Pages 81-83 and 95-98 of this volume features 'Tramps Abroad' written by Fisher, relating to his experiences of the South African War. - The 'Onawe', 'Fleet Wing', and 'Zephyr' yachts. Captioned as "At Lyttelton Regatta Day" (located between p35 and 36). - "The editor and his assistants. The man is riding a small donkey. - A photograph of Johannes Andersen 'Our fighting editor'. - The Southern Alps captioned 'The backbone of New Zealand'. - 'Land sale at Darfield' featuring men inside a wooden building. - Images of the Avon River. - The Post Office building in Ashburton. - Eight photographs of Hanmer and the surrounding area, including images of the Sanitorium. - A section titled 'Southward Ho!' which includes photographs of Port Chalmers, the 'Mararoa' steam ship, and 'Falls on Fraser River (Stewarts Island)'. - An article relating to the 52nd Anniversary of the Canterbury Province, located at p114 of the volume (Jan 1, 1903). Description: Photograph album relating to Edith Constance Lockett of Lower Hutt, Wellington, illustrating her family life and her brother Kenneth Ewart Lockett's military service. Images taken by E C Lockett and unidentified photographer(s) ca 1915-1920s. Album inscribed 'Edith C Lockett, Lower Hutt, Feb 10th 1917' on inside front cover, and likely compiled by Edith Lockett. The album contains images of the Lockett family, particularly Edith Lockett and her siblings, Kenneth Ewart, Winifred Maud, and Edward William Lockett. The album also contains group portraits with Edith Lockett's parents, Ada Florence (nee Harrowby) and Henry George Lockett, and members of their extended family and friends, chiefly taken at the family home at 14 Stevens Grove, Lower Hutt. The album also has photographs from Kenneth Ewart Lockett's military service in World War One from November 1916 onward, and shows Kenneth and other soldiers at their camp, and includes images of army tents at an unknown location. The album also includes images of recreation activities primarily by women, such as women swimming and both men and women at the beach. Some photographs show women playing croquet and tennis, and with horses. There are also photographs in the album of bicycles and automobiles. Description: Personal photographs of family and friends. The collection has a strong female focus; Edith Smith and what are probably her classmates and friends at an easter camp, swimming, in groups, and just generally together. There are photographs of what must be family, relations, and family friends. Some of these are associated with a farm, and there are photographs of mothers and grandmothers with babies. Men appear in the later photographs more and more, especially from 1914/15 when most of them are soldiers on their way to war This is a collection primarily focused on people. Names and places have been written on the lids of negative boxes. These have been archived and their numbers relate to negative groups recorded in the negative registers. However these negative groups do not necessarily relate to the information on the box lids to which they are related. Quantity: 270 b&w original photographic print(s).
