Description: Comprise correspondence, drafts of poems, reflections, reminiscences and stories of his life in Rumania before coming to New Zealand, and of his wartime experiences, research papers on plants and agriculture in Germany, copies of his certificates in agricultural engineering and plant research from Rumania and France, and newspaper clippings of his retirement in Hawkes Bay. His work as a plant pathologist and tree and forest management specialist with the DSIR and Forestry Institute is not covered in this collection. Source of title - Supplied Harry Jacks was born in Rumania and after gaining qualifications in plant research in France, came to New Zealand in the 1930's, where he worked with the DSIR and the Forestry Institute. During World War II he served with 2NZEF in Greece and on Crete, trained commandos and served on special operations in Yugoslavia and Greece. Retired to his farm at Havelock North in the 1970s. Description: Album of photographs, mostly relating to New Zealanders in the South African War, but also including many which show the D Battery, 1st New Zealand Mounted Rifles at various military camps in the Wellington region. Many show groups of soldiers, with surnames noted. One view shows the Opening of Parliament in 1898, with a parade of D Battery; and a few show the opening of the Star Boating Club in Wellington. Some images taken by unidentified photographers, some probably taken by Thomas Watson Brown. The earliest image was taken in 1878, and shows a home in Masterton; another image shows a work picnic with a group in a tug-of-war at Day's Bay, in 1912; a group portrait of staff in the Mines Department taken in Wellington, 1907; and a group portrait of the 10th anniversary reunion of the 1st New Zealand Contingent, held in Wellington, 21.10.1909, taken by Zak Studios, No. 7275. Description: Photographs of World War II servicemen and air cadets from the collection of airman Stuart Jones. Taken circa 1939-1945 by a range of photographers, some of whom are identified. - A series of studio portraits taken by Universal Studios (Dunedin) show air cadets in uniform. Don T Curtis of Wangui [Wanganui?], R Collins of Mata-mata [Matamata], M Walton of Wairoa, B Campbell of Auckland, K [Waterdale?], Noel Price [or Pine?], and Jones are identified on the rear of the prints in which they appear. Also includes two photographs of larger groups of cadets taken by photographer Gordon J McCusker (Blenheim), one of which is mounted on card and the other which is signed on the rear by a number of cadets. Also contains a studio portrait showing a soldier posed in front of a pyramid backdrop. - Servicemen and cadets are also photographed in uniform in informal settings. Photographs include "The Gang" outside Ezbekeih Garden in Cairo, a series of images of men in a bush or jungle setting [Pacific campaign?], an image of a large group sitting in a valley captioned "Sit down strike delta", socialising (including one image where men are dressed as women), and soldier Pat Sharpin in uniform in front of a house and in a garden [in New Zealand?]. - Stuart Jones is identified on the rear of a portrait of two cadets but it is not certain which of the two men is Jones. The blond man who may be Jones appears in numerous photographs. This man may also be Noel Price [or Pine?]. Description: Arthur Gordon Black recalls earliest recollections when he was a boy of four at Porangahau (Southern Hawkes Bay) in 1923 living on a soldier's resettlement farm. Mentions grandfather who lived with them and who had served in Afghanistan war. Describes childhood activities, traversing much of the countryside on foot and pony, finding a bird's nest which contained a human skull with a stone axe in it, and which is now in Napier Museum. Also describes Porangahau School and mentions Miss Tracey who taught there from 1924-1945 and Alf Mudgway. Mentions itinerant gentleman who took music. Other aspects of Porangahau discussed includes: Six o clock closing and Maori rule of not being allowed to take liquor away from hotel; 1931 Earthquake; Proficiency exam; lack of co-educational schools; camps for unemployed; Depression; college uniforms and church parades. Describes Wellington Teachers' College which re-opened after the Depression in 1938 and refers to New Education Conference. Mentions Frank Lopdell, Frank Coombs, Walter Scott and Ron Lockhart. Refers to First Labour Government in 1935. Outlines teaching career, commencing with probationary year at Te Awa School followed by sole charge at Tarawera. Explains how sole charge operated. In 1942 joined Navy and talks about trip across Pacific to Canada, referring to `HMS Philomel' and `Capetown Castle'. Description: Ted Hill was born in Birmingham, England in 1920. Recalls his mother's death when he was six years old and several housekeepers. Describes being interested in singing and painting as a child and leaving school at the age of fourteen. Describes his father's death from an accident when he was sixteen. Talks about working for an accounting firm and then for his uncle's building business where he learnt about drawing, buildings and surveying. Discusses joining the army in 1940, being accepted for officer training and going to the north west frontier of India. Gives a detailed description of his time in India, becoming a parachutist, and being sent to Imphal where the Japanese were driven out. Recalls rethinking his direction after the war and doing a course in architecture at Art School in Birmingham. Describes the battle between classical and modern architecture at the time. Recalls his first job in Birmingham and a subsequent job in London. Mentions marriage and divorce before coming to New Zealand in 1958. Provenance: Letter found by donor in a book purchased at a book fair in Palmerston North in 2016. The book was 'The will of the tribe' by Arthur Upfield. The presence of a Health Stamp Souvenir Cover suggests that the letter was written in 1941.
