Description: Shows camp in a flat basin, with horse exercise yard and flagpole in left foreground, and other square fenced yards further off. In middle distance are the main barracks, and scattered buildings of a small town behind. The Waipa River may be visible at left before it flows behind central rise separating foreground from background. Pirongia Mountain may be the hill at right, although Pirongia Mountain is supposed to be twin-coned. Alexandra is the old name for Pirongia. Members of the 2nd Waikato Regiment built a strong redoubt on a hill at the west side of the town, in about 1864. Description: Three drawings of soldiers near Te Awamutu. Two are pencil, ink and watercolour, with one soldier standing, one on horseback. The upper view has a military camp in the background and shows the men in profile; the central view shows the men on guard, seen from behind, watching over a valley. The lowest view, in pencil, is a landscape with soldiers passing along a path away from the artist. Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'. Description: Map of sections around Waiari Pa on the Mangapiko river, near Pirongia. Shows the Waiari Pa, the military redoubt (fort) across the river (40th regiment), another redoubt with annotation 'afterwards camp', the Mangapiko river and Tauwhare Pa. Roads and numbered land blocks are mapped around the Waiari Pa and the river, numbered from 102-125 and 283-300 (not inclusive). The name 'Ford' is associated with a point on the river. One road leads to Te Rore, one to Te Piringia. A diagram labelled 'graves' is identified. Some red annotations on the map point to the river, to Ford's name, to section 124 named '?Parekuoa' (or 'Pare Kuoa). An illustrated piece of printed paper 4.5 x 4.5 cm has been subsequently attached to the map which reads 'View from Paterangi looking towards Mangapiko River and Mt. Kakepuku.' (Unknown source).
