Description: Diagrammatic map drawn on higher ground overlooking the scene where the HMS Buffalo navy ship was wrecked ('28th July 1840, at 10 am'). Map shows the site was wrecked, in a flat, sandy beach area, the thickly wooded hills behind it, the encampment of those who were in the wrecked ship, points on the beach where parts of the ship were washed ashore, and an area of flat marshy ground. Also depicted is the neighbouring pa site (maori village) of the Chief Teraroa, ('Teraroa's hippah'), the encampment of the part of the Buffalo's crew 'who were employed in the firest, preparing the cargo, Mercury River, part of Wiritianga's pa site, as well as Mr Brown's wharf-store and settlement ('Buffalo's store's were landed there'). Signature of creator on map but hard to distinguish. Appears to be ?T. Laslett. Shows several drawings of trees, buildings at Brown's settlement, navy tents. Description: Shows six Maori men launching a canoe into waves. Palm trees or tall tree ferns are at the right. Engraving has been cut from page containing 2 engravings; see full page at A-256-028. Image of canoe, and possibly the whole image, is derived from a work by Louis Auguste de Sainson 'Village a l'anse de l'Astrolabe, Nouvelle Zelande' showing Astrolabe Bay (Golden Bay, South Island) not Mercury Bay, with local Maori dragging a canoe into the water, in 1827 during a French visit to the area. The palm trees suggest a scant knowledge of New Zealand geography and flora on the part of the engraver. Description: Engraving from the official account of Cook's first voyage, based on a drawing of Te Puta o te Paretauhinau Pa at Mercury Bay, Coromandel Peninsula (not Tolaga Bay as claimed in the title). The drawing of the pa is by Herman Diedrich Sporing, Sir Joseph Banks' clerk; the canoe is copied from a drawing by Sydney Parkinson, the official artist aboard the Endeavour. The scene shows a boat from the Endeavour being rowed in the left foreground; a small canoe with five Maori engaged in fishing in the right foreground; an arched rock in the water behind the boats with a pa on top of it; two canoes pulled up on the bank to the right behind the arched rock and dense bush in the background. Exhibitied in 'Drawn From Nature: Europeans Record New Zealand, 1770-1860' exhibition at the National Library Gallery, 31 March to 28 May 1989.
