In the background are hills, dwellings and fences. The image is most likely from the summer of 1899, taken by an unidentified photographer. The fragment of manuscript the photograph is mounted on appears to be part of a journal documenting excursions around Whangarei Harbour in the summer of 1899, and makes specific reference to McLeod Bay and Urquharts Bay in the area.
