Two pencilled notes refer to the estimated acreage of the shaded area as 8,500 rather than 10,000 acres. Rivers, settlements, cities and towns are named, as are coastal features such as bays, capes, points, heads, rocks, sounds, inlets. Principal lighthouses are marked. Lit lighthouses are also recorded. Points of shipwrecks are marked with the name and type of ship, the date of shipwreck and lives lost. Insets include lists of shipwrecks with references to places and points of shipwreck. Dates range from September 1795 - 2 March 1936. Description: Surveying map of defence works adjacent to the Ngauranga Stream. Includes sites of N.C.O.'s cottage, a stable, engine shed and shed. The site of an hotel is marked. A note refers to an old peg in fence (Climie) opposite Clapham's Hotel. Topographic features are described and include details of a hill and edge of a cliff. The Wellington & Napier Railway line is named. The second surveying map in the top right corner is of section 8 and includes the site of a peg in fence opposite the Clapham Hotel. A pencilled note refers to the Ngauranga Hotel which has been overwritten with the name of Clapham's Hotel. An area of Native Reserve and the site of the Main Road are marked. Includes the name I. H. Luscombe. Description: A surveyed, cadastral map of part section number 25, Lower Hutt, bounded by the intersection of Waiwhetu Road and the old Main Road from Wellington to Wairarapa. The highlighted part section is over 15 perches and built on it is a bank and a small dwelling. It is bounded by property owned by R Cleland (including a store) and H Brandt. The Whitewood's Hotel is opposite. An unsigned handwritten note of length on the map states that the intention is to bring the section boundaries under the provision of the Land Transfer Act, 1870. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Paramata, Plimmerton and Pukerua districts with Mana Island. Location of several pa sites indicated: Wairaka Pa near Pukerua Bay; Taupo Pa (built 1844) at Plimmerton, Warakoua Pa on Porirua Harbour's North shore, and a pa at Titahi Bay. Also shows location of Jackson's Hotel, Thom's hotel and whaling station, Maori gardens beyond Taupo pa and Maori path to Pukerua Bay. Subdivisions of land are indicated around Porirua Harbour. Attributed to Charles Heaphy until 1993, because sketches referred to in title were thought to be Heaphy's. Reattribution to Brees because 1. Brees was Principal surveyor for the N.Z.Company and the map shows land subdivisions. 2. Handwriting very similar to Brees' on MS map held by the Admiralty (photo held by Cartographic Collection (823 at / 1844-5 / acc 855) 3. Indications of points of view of sketches can mostly be linked with known originals by Brees. The following list gives the numbers on this map followed by titles and plate numbers of the matching illustration from Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). Description: Map of the coast line of the provincial district of Hawke's Bay, from Mahia southwards to the Waimata River depicting the Maori names of topographical features such as rivers, capes and islands. Has some place names. Some of the names on the map are Waikawa, Kini Kini, Waikopopu and Kahutara (Mahia); Waiohinganga [river] which enters the Ko te Wanganui o Roto, Ahuriri and Mataruahou (Napier); Mutu Mawi (Te Matau a Maui - Cape Kidnappers) and Paoanui, Tuingara and Parimaha (near Pourerere). Includes an accompanying letter from Horace Baker, Chief Surveyor Napier District Office, to the Surveyor-General, stamped 3064/2, with a note 'To be forwarded to Mr White, Native Department, ... 1879'. This information was provided by the Chief Surveyor of the Survey Office Napier to the Surveyor General, Wellington and then transferred to the Native Department.
