Description: Photograph album created by Neville H Mosen of Raetithi. Contains views related to trips taken by the Tongariro Tramping Club and views related to the Mosen family and friends. Taken by Neville Mosen circa 1936 to 1937, and possibly some taken by other unidentified photographer(s). Contains scenic views and views of the Club members on bush walks and skiing in Tongariro National Park, featuring Ruapehu, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and surrounding environs, the Pinnacles at Blue Bluffs, Ruapehu crater lake, Tama Lakes, The Chateau, Whakapapa glacier, Karioi Lakes, Mangawhero River and various tramping huts. Bruce Davis, an amateur photographer who lived in Raetihi is identified. Also includes views of Raetihi township and Horopito locality, Napier, Tauranga (rail bridge and The Strand), and Ngauruhoe erupting (possibly 1937 eruption). Also includes views of Tom Parker posing with the fountain he gifted to Napier in 1936 and scenes of a parade and bonfire in Raetihi to mark the coronation of King George VI in 1937. Also includes the wedding of Gwen Wise (circa 1930s) 5 loose prints have page numbers noted and are in an envelope at the front of the album. Description: 11 scenes of crowds awaiting the arrival of the first rail car on the line at Pahiatua. They include one of the crowd on the Masterton platform; another taken from the middle of the tracks with the crowds looking towards the photographer; and another of a man addressing the crowd from the driver's compartment. A railcar of the type in the photographs was trialed in May 1936 but these images look as if they were taken later. Seven railcars were built and the one in this collection is most likely to be Maahunui with the running number 4, as part of the name is visible in 1/4-029734. The railcar had a petrol engine, a lavatory, electric light and hot air heating and was driver controlled (information from Godber album PA1-q-101 p.96). Photographer unidentified. Description: Hand-drawn map of the area from Taumarunui following the main trunk line and the Ongarue River northwards to Mangeokewa River to the Waikato River and Waihaha River to Waituhi. Creeks, streams and rivers are named, some marked in blue. Watersheds of the Mokau, Wanganui and Waikato Rivers are prominently marked as are land blocks and mountain peaks which include height in feet. Lines of the Taringamotu Company's Tram and the Mangapehe Tram are drawn and the map includes many references to tram formations. Directions with mileages are given to Lake Taupo.
