Other - Published in the Evening Post on 10 May 1971 Caption - Evening Post caption reads: "The scene at the top of Mount Ruapehu yesterday after Saturday's violent eruption sent ash and rocks thousands of feet into the air. This view, taken from the Desert Road side, shows the spread of mud and ash on the snow surrounding the crater lake. In the lake itself a dark patch shows a minor release of gas bubbling the hot water. On the left is the Whangaehu River valley, down which the mud was cascading after the eruption."
