Description: Topographic map of the area from the Wanganui River near Petania, includes parts of the Ongarue River and Main Trunk Line, the Punui and Waikato rivers, Lakes Taupo and Rotoaira. Names of rivers, some mountain ranges and settlements are included. Rohe Potae (i.e. King Country) land, in the Taupo Ruapehu districts, claimed by the Ngati Maniapoto and that awarded to Ngati Tuwharetoa are divided by a boundary line and referred to in key. 'Maniapoto' and 'Tuwharetoa' are written across their respective land. Description: A collection of map information from various sources from 1858-1892. The maps no. 1-6 and 8 contain information from Native Land Court plans of the 1880's, Survey Office road plans, Lands and Survey's first amendment (Mr Cussen's topographical survey), a map by S. Percy Smith, and the Sub-Atlas committee. The information has been added in different pens and hand writing eg "Plan marked from Hokianga" or "no track here shown by Mr Cussen". The map marked no. 7 shows military information from the New Zealand wars eg "Troops to be sent to Waikaremoana via Ahikereru - Ruatahuna Huiarau from Taupo". Shows some native tracks eg "from Heruiwi" and corrections or previous omissions. Map no. 9 shows tracks on N.L.C. plans, one of which "is away at the Court". The maps show very little signs of any settlement, except No. 3 and 6 "Tapuaeharuru Pa" and "Te Pueto Stn". A mission station, a native settlement and a school are also indicated. The maps cover the region from Hokianga, Kawhia Harbour, Mokau River, Waikato River, Tirau, Taupo to Rotorua on maps 1-6, 8 and Rotorua to Waikaremoana to Poverty Bay on maps 7 and [9]. All maps depict rivers. Map 7 and [9] are maps with annotations. They are on the published base map "Four-mile sheet, No. 10" (Wellington, New Zealand Lands and Surveys, 1935). Description: Illustrated letter from Thomas Forsaith to 'Bob' (almost certainly his brother Robert, in England), describing a month-long journey through the Waikato region via Thames in 1845; Forsaith remarked on `the lamentable' British ignorance of the `Natives' here mentioned in the report. He writes of his companions, his journey through Thames and the Waihou River, Matamata, the Maunga Tautari mountain, Otawhao, Waipa, Kawhia, Aotia, Waingaroa, Waikato, Manukau Harbour and the settlement of Te Karaka to Auckland. His adventures included wading through swamps, travelling up and down rivers and creeks, giving a political harangue using `mob oratory' to `a large concourse of Natives', finding shining stones on the path (which turned out not to be diamonds), getting separated from his companions and becoming seriously lost. After enduring a night in wet clothes, making his own shelter, eating raw `native cabbage' and demolishing a hut in order to build a raft to cross a river he was reunited with his companions. The text is interspersed with ten watercolour drawings depicting his party, Maori and topographical scenes; it would seem the man dressed in blue is Forsaith. The illustrations are (1) a group of four travellers including four Maori and one European; (2) Rangitoto with two vessels close by; (3) waka with eight people in including three speaking, with bubbles `E te Potete ngarea...Mr Forsaith urge 'im on', `Come pull away boys, "Tena e tama mia hoea'" and `Tena ku me-a'; (5) officer wading through swamp; (6) Forsaith displaying `mob oratory' to a group of Maori; (7) Waikato beach, cliffs and land with travellers; (8) man wading through swamp; (9) man on raft following demolition of hut; (10) and an eel trap Source of title - Supplied The letter is written by Forsaith, probably to his brother, Robert, whom he calls Bob and Dr Bob, who had sent him British Parliamentary papers which included a report on the state of Maori Quantity: 2 folder(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Description: Negatives taken ca 1900-1915 by John Harold Kendrick in the Awaroa River Valley, Hauturu area, south Kawhia. They show men splitting roof shingles, splitting fence battons, fencing, using a bottle jack in the bush, clearing and bringing in land, and road building. Also a steamboat on Awaroa River, dugout canoes, Maori buildings, groups of people (Maori and pakeha), woman doing hand washing, and short horn cattle. The house built by John Kendrick and his brother Ernest, the vegetable garden, the hens, the house cow, general views of their land on the Awaroa River, and the two men at work and on horse back. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Arrangement: Negatives at 1/2-230859-F to 1/2-230919-F John Harold Kendrick came to New Zealand from Birmingham, England, as a farm cadet. Description: Extensive view framed by tree ferns and flax in the foreground, looking down unto a small river winding through cultivated fields and scattered houses, with the kainga mentioned in the title presumably the cluster of buildings to the right. There is a ridge of low hills beyond the near river valley then the extensive plain of the Waihou River, formerly called the Thames, with mountains in the distance The original watercolour by Liardet is at C-137-005. The Thames River, named by Captain Cook, is now known by its original Maori name as the Waihou River. The "Kawaeranga" River is the Kauaerangi. Mt Pukekawa does not appear to be a name used in the area depicted any longer - the closest Pukekawa is some 50 kilometres to the west on the far side of the Waikato River. On the verso is a pencil and faint watercolour drawing of a pair of pink dancing shoes and a fan. Description: There are six general groups of photographs making up this album. The first relates to a surveying tramp through part of the the south eastern Rimutaka Ranges. It begins at Wharepapa outstation west of Lake Onoke (Lake Ferry). There are views of Palliser Bay, Lake Ferry, Wharepapa outstation, the surrounding farmland, and people attached to the station. The survey team's tramp into the mountains followed the Wharepapa River north west of the station and then up the Papatahi stream to the Papatahi trig. Here they set up camp which is depicted under snow. They then moved south to the trig on Mount Matthews where they again set up camp. There are images of tents, men, native forest, Mt Matthews, the trig, dogs, the surrounding ranges, and views of Palliser Bay. The party descended with their equipment via Matthews Stream to Eglington's Whare at Mukamuka. The second group is a record of a family holiday at Tokaanu and Lake Taupo. Again there are views of the tents, and the party consisted of women as well as men, including Girdlestone's mother. There are images of the Tokannu River, the Tokaanu Stream, the Tongariro River, views of Tokaanu township, the Tokaanu wharf on Lake Taupo, boats, the Waimarino track, hot springs, rod fishers on Lake Taupo and the rivers, and the Tongariro Bridge. There are a group of images taken during a fishing trip and picnic at Waihaha, Western Bay, Lake Taupo, and a view of Waihi Village and the Waihi Falls. Another group of images of Maori were taken at Otukou west of Lake Rotaira, and include views of the meeting house "Okahukura". The third group of images relate to a survey camp in the Tokaanu/Waimarino area, though there may be camps in more than one location. The main camp was located at Tokaanu, but another is described as being on the Waimarino plains, and another is located on the Pihanga Saddle. There are views of the camp, tents, men, and of life in the camp such as hair cutting, and Maori visiting on Sunday (one of the team's members was Maori). Images of bush and distant views were taken along the horse track from Otukou to Tokaanu, and there are views of the Volcanic Plateau and Mount Ngauruhoe, Otukou Village, hot springs, Ketetahi hut cookhouse and springs on Mount Tongariro, Pihanga hill south of Tokaanu, the countryside and a climbing party on Ngauruhoe. The fourth group consist of twelve photographs taken in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. The fifth group of 46 images record a climb up Mount Egmont. There are views of the mountain, native forest, climbers in the snow, and the accomodation house. One group of images consists of close ups of native alpine plants in flower. The sixth group relate to a walking trip on the Volcanic Plateau through forest and open country. There are views of the mountains, cliffs, a stream and celmisias in flower.
