Description: Shows Henry Wiliams, John Morgan, Alfred Nesbit Brown and Dr William Fairburn, struggling through a flax or raupo edged swamp, assisted by Maori. According to the associated text, 'The scene took place in a journey of hte missionaries to Matamata ... The European to the left is intended for the Rev. Henry Williams; the one on the right for Mr Morgan, who, having slipped into a hole, is being helped out by the native; the two in teh centre for the Rev. A. N. Brown and Dr Fairburn. Description: A large Maori pa in the foreground, with wharenui, other houses and a pataka. People seated by a cooking fire on the left and in the entrance to the wharenui. Flax, toetoe, cabbage trees and other bush in an around the pa. In the background is part of Lake Taupo and Mounts Ruapehu and Tongariro, the latter in eruption Inscriptions: Verso - on stretcher in felt-tip pen: Lake Taupo, Hatepe. Description: Postcard shows a Maori settlement on the shores of Lake Taupo, with the outlet in the foreground being the source of the Waikato River. The mountains of the Central Plateau are in the distance. A plume of smoke issues from Ngauruhoe. There is a cabbage tree at the far right, and beyond it are whare and a pataka. Flax grows in the foreground, and there are tree ferns across the water at the left. Verso shows an engraving by W R Bock, of Mt Earnslaw, head of Lake Wakatipu, with a Maori prow carving overarching it. Scene on recto is similar to the chromolithograph by Thomas Ryan: "Lake Taupo and Waikato River, with Tongariro and Ruapehu" (1893), published in the NZ Graphic Christmas number 1893, page 11.
