Description: Five drawings on one page. From the top, 'Heke's first pah' shows Hone Heke's pa in the background, with Lake Omapere in the foreground, groups of Maori gathered. 'Landing a canoe' shows a long waka landing by pa pallisades to the right, with a volcanic peak in the background. Seated and standing men are in the canoe, and on land. Five rowers are waving oars in the air. The view of Tamaki shows a rolling landscape with a ridged volcanic peak in the background. 'Three seated Maori' have their cloaks wrapped around them. Description: Shows the shore of Lake Rotorua with European and Maori settlement, grazing pigs and steam rising from various spots. In the foreground, a Maori woman is wading into the water, with another paddling a canoe laden with flax kits. On the small peninsula in the background, the palisades of an earlier sunken pa can be seen, along with part of the current pa, its palisades and buildings. Along the foreshore are European houses and hotels, including the Lake Hotel on the shore. Other structures are in the process of being built.. The peninsula does not feature the first St Faith's Church, prominent in most views of Ohinemutu. The church was cosecrated in 1885, the year this work was done, suggesting that the watercolour was completed early in the year Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - monogram J over S inside C and the date 1885. Description: A Maori waka on the river, looking across to hills, and a niu pole rising above a fenceline on the opposite bank. The pole is almost certainly 'Kemp's Pole', raised by Te Rangihiwinui Kepa (Major Kemp) to show the boundary of a trust area he wanted reserved as Maori land. The area around the pole is tapu, as it is the site of an ancient village and urupa (burial ground). Raorikia (Maori transliteration of the Biblical city name, Laodicea, Asia Minor) is located in a valley of the Kauarapaoa Stream, a feeder stream of the lower Whanganui River. Description: Shows the interior of a whare, with a white-bearded Maori man sitting on the ground beside a fire, a small dog asleep on the ground beside him. A taiaha leans on the wall at the left, and on the far wall hangs a kete and a musket. The man wears a dogskin cloak and an earring. Through the open doorway can be seen a canoe drawn up on the shore of Wellington Harbour, and a group of three figures (two kneeling, apparently blowing on a fire below a cauldron) close to a gap in the fence of wooden spiked poles. A hill, probably the Western Hills near Petone, is visible in the background The title of this work on acquisition, assigned by the seller, was Maori in whare at Pipitea Pa. However the man depicted bears a strong resemblance to Honiana Te Puni (compare Barraud's lithograph 'Te Puni' published 1877 as plate II in New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive) and the oil paintings held by the Wellington City Council and National Library of Australia. The dogskin cloak being worn, with a lighter patch on the left front opening, is also very like the cloak shown in Barraud's other portraits of Te Puni. If the subject is Te Puni, the whare in which he is seated is more likely to be at Petone Pa than at Pipitea Pa. The sea and hills behind are also positioned as if from a view from of Petone Pa, not those near Pipitea Pa. Other Titles - [Maori in whare at Pipitea Pa. Description: Palisades of the pa at Kaiwharawhara, at the water's edge, with raupo houses, with verandahs and tree-trunk columns in the foreground, with one Maori man reclining in the left foreground and a woman and child seated by one of the whare. Two canoes, with Maori chapel of raupo beyond them in the middle ground and a European yacht beyond that. On the background hill to the right, the whalers' lookout "Tutaewera", aand on the central hill, a zig-zag Maori path running up the Ngaio Gorge area. The background range shows British Peak on the left and Mount Kaukau on the right. The file print during 1970s and 80s attributed to John Pearse and titled "Wellington". Description: View of a Maori village at the water's edge. Two canoes are in the water, one being rowed out beyond poles holding it in place. The seven people in the view are all dressed in Maori garb. There are two dwellings and two pataka (storehouses) on the river bank, all with thatched (raupo?) roofs. Beyond them is a substantial row of palisades and a gateway, with carvings spaced along the fence and the roofs of further dwellings and storage platforms visible. Catalogued by both Sotheby's and McArthur's as the work of Clarke. However on both stylistic and handwriting grounds (c.f. Merrett's work in A.T.L. and the British Library), the work appears to be by Merrett.
